Whooohooo!

Every time I see one of these threads, I wish I could have helped that knifemaker. It's SOOO easy to build one of these variable speed 2x72's for between $400-$600. I just HATE spending a lot of money on my tooling. So I learned to build everything. I found that all of this expensive equipment is rather easy to build, for half....maybe even a third the price!

But congrats on it. I know you'll enjoy making blades with it. :)

It's a neat design and there are features about it I like. But being able to switch quickly from a flat platen to a wheel isn't something I need to do regularly, so losing the tool arm style to speed up the swapping doesn't do anything for me.

I spend most of my time on the flat platen and then switch betweeh 6" wheel, 10", 12", rotary platen, slack platen, small wheel attachment. Rarely back and forth between two of them.
Can i ask what a rotary platen is?

A rotary platen is 4 wheels on a sub plate with a flat v groove belt running around them. Allows you to slack grind with variable backing pressure rather than just whatever tension your belt happens to be.
