So I'm getting a new knife and I have it narrowed down to two:

The Al Mar Payara or the new Spyderco Captain.

Both are made of about the same materials, both have about the same blade. I'm leaning toward the Al Mar...but the lack of a lanyard hole is holding me back from pulling the trigger.

A little help in deciding?

Will you be doing much like over water in a boat or anything like that? A landyard hole can be real handly then. I make all my personal knives with one in the handle just incase I ever get in a boat or raft and plan on using my knife for what ever duties. But if It slips out of my hand it will still be on my hand becasue of the landyard.

Good luck in your pick.

Spyderco Captain. ALL my knives are different, BUT I insist on a lanyard hole. If you are out in the cold, hands freezing, its easy to drop your blade. I attach my knife to ME via a lanyard. If you dont like that idea, tie an piece of orange paracord onto the knife so that if you should drop it in water etc, you can at least SEE it!

I like the Spyderco Captain---the VG10 is an excellent steel, and the radical blade shape lends itself to some fun cutting chores. I imagine the intense recurve on either of these knives would take some getting used to, as my Captain did for me. The ergonomics are typical Spyderco---excellent---and it's just a fine knife. I don't carry it nearly as much as I should---the many Military models of my collection are my babies---but it's a good knife.

i edc an al mar shrike which has the same handle as the payara. the liner lock is one of the better ones out there (then again so is spyderco's). i handled the captain at a show a while back and the handle seemed a tiny bit cramped to me where as the al mar handle is nice and long and plain. even though i love spyderco i feel as if some of their handle designs are made to be ergonomically perfect in ONE grip, but with the al mar handle you can hold it any way you want and it feels relatively the same.

both solid companies though. good luck

edit: also note that the captain has a big swedge on the spine making it pretty painful to put any hand pressure on top of the blade. oh yeah, and IMO the al mar VG-10 seems to have slightly better edge holding than the spyderco VG-10. i own and use both. im guessing slightly different heat treat... both are good but al mar takes it by a hair (or lack of after testing !)

I like the captain a LOT more, and find it comfortable in a wide variety of grips. The balance of the payara is waaaaay off to me and seems to have a less versatile blade shape. Just my two cents.
