Since my weekend trip was canceled, I made 2 psk. (Will post second one in another thread) This one is an old ammo pouch which is geared towards my area of brackish or putrid water sources, lots of game & fish, lots of rain, mild tempertures.

Things I need to add: Salt & Peppr packs, Small Tabasco bottle, and your suggestions.

I think you've got the basics covered there. A couple suggestions might be a lighter upgrade - get a Bic instead of a cheapo brand. Some additional first aid items - band-aids (or duct tape), Immodium, analgesics etc. You might want to consider a survival straw - http://giardiaclub.com/survival-water-filter-straw/index.php

But like I said, you've got the basics - it's a good kit IMO. Glad to see the candle.

Mike Spinak posted a link to his webpage that details his kit - it's extremely well done so I think it's a good reference for anyone:

EDIT:
Forgot to mention - sunscreen. It's an often overlooked item. You can get handy PSK-sized sticks these days:

And TP - unless you like leaves.:D

Good idea with the tins. Often overlooked.

Good thinking about your environment and packing accordingly. I'd bet you could downsize this a bit, or hold more gear if you were inclined to tweak it some.

Thx for the pics!

real nice....I usually throw 2 mylar space blankets in my psk's one can be used as a tarp type shelter the other as groundcover...they are cheap, and easy to stow.. just a thought.

Well, I'm no survival guru, but sounds like you'd but in a woody environment with this kit. And with no way to handle med-large sized wood, I would thing some type fo saw would be a good idea. SAK, fiskars, gerber whatever, ya know?

This kit looks nice, and covers most basics

Buck268 beat me to it but I agree, something to handle wood for shelter or fire building, A small saw, a pocket chainsaw or Sak would probably fit best in this kit.

Some kind of adhesive tape, Duct etc, You have cottonballs and neosporin, with a patch of medical tape you have a bandage, but a couple bandaids couldnt hurt

I assume the bandana goes in the kit, if not put it in.

Anyone find a good use for the grenade pouches? I cut them off... the game wardens get all snippy when I fish with grenades...

Ammo pouches are awesome, you can get a lot of gear in there. I find the top part is perfect for a space blanket and bandana. With a little creativity, one can be zip-tied to the front of your fixed blade's sheath and you're good to go.

Certainly a good start.
Do the cotton balls have vaseline on them? Otherwise the don't work when wet.
I would add a mirror and upgrade your whistle.
Definitely switch to a Bic those others can fail at any moment.
Are you carrying something for shelter?
I lke the little loaf pans; I have to try them out.

This is what I carry in mine.

Knife is in pocket.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I raided my main survival kit to put this together and I left a lot of stuff out that wouldn't fit. I am going to rework this kit, but now I must make a rabbit snare. I heard there are some big bunnies running around tonight. Mmmm roasted rabbit.

The multi-tool is a Seber M4 which is way better than the Leatherman squirt that I own. The other is a cheap Gerber from a trade show that I have never used. I bought it to leave in my main survival box, and I reason if I bought something nice, I wouldn't leave it in the survival box.

So I'm not the only one.:p I bought a SRKT M6 to put in my pack I keep in the car. Yeah that only happend a few months later when I got my HRLM. Now it's the one I fondle.:D
I'm looking for a small belt pouch but most are too bulky. How are the ammo pouches? Are there slim ones out there?

There are smaller ammo pouches out there. Look at the MOLLE ones. I had this one (7.5"x 3.5"x 2.5") already along with some older bigger M-14 style ones. I have not found a use for the grenade holders on the side yet.

for a belt pouch i like to use digicam pouches, with a zipper opening and a little velcro pouch on the front. they come in alot of different sizes and there are some neat styles. you can usually find them pretty cheap at walmarts and camera stores. alot of them have little d-rings so you can also hook them to a shoulder strap. one other thing that i particularly like them for is the fact that they don't scare people. just a regular old camera pouch on the belt.

hey guys, just to mention an alternative to a belt mounted psk, I took the rig that I had made for my kit and ka-bar, took out the ka-bar and put another little pouch in the place of it. Now, with still the contents of the old pouch, just split up, they sit under both my arms, with a harness. Kits nice, and doesnt cramp up my belt.

You can fit a GI angle head (D Cell/ Full Size) flashlight in one very easily and it will hold well enough. They tend to pop up and can find their way out, but under most circumstances it'll work and can even be a means of hands free operation.

I agree with the idea of adding a small wood saw. Other than that you seem to have most of the basics covered.

I've found you can stuff some of the narrower Himalayan Imports khukuri scabbards into them. :D That way your knife doesn't take up space inside your kit.
