An ABUNDANCE of snow!

Hi All,

Well, it’s official: there is an abundance of snow on Blue Mountain. Now, I have been snowshoeing in some deep powder before, but this (the result of a solid week of almost continuous snow – you have to love those lake effect flurries) was something else. The base in the forest is about 4 ft, with some drifts upwards of 5.5. All of my trails have disappeared, and the area that I hike almost every week looks and feels totally foreign, as I am not used to viewing it form so high up! There is so much snow on the trees that hiking through the woods feels like walking through a tunnel at times – snow beneath your feet, snow to the sides, and snow above you. It would be absolutely impossible to make any progress through this terrain without snowshoes.

I spent the entire day in the woods, and it was a crazy workout. The combination of crisp white snow and dazzling blue sky was stunning. I thought I would share a few pictures with you guys. Enjoy! Oh, and Doc Canada, I really hope that you guys get some snow down your way soon – I think we have enough, so I’m willing to share the rest!

Doesn’t hurt to have a hiking companion:

This is just a standing dead tree, but the build-up of snow on top has given it a bit of a hat:

Hiking through the woods was difficult at times: brush a tree the wrong way, and you quickly find yourself looking like a snowman as everything shakes loose!

So, that’s it. It was a great day. I have never seen the area look so beautiful. It was a real treat to be able to spend the day up to my armpits in snow.

Thanks for looking, and all the best!

- Mike

Wow... Great Pictures, makes me want to go shake the trees!

Fantastic

A little snow down the back when going under those conifers :p

Damn - no snow here :( It's January and the temperatures are like 10 Celsius at night - IN THE MOUNTAINS !!! :(
The world's going wrong...

Great pics

Well that just looks nice..but I dont want to be there too cold!

Ha, well, after two hours of hiking, you would be tempted to start peeling off layers. I built up a bit of a sweat going up some hills. It was -14 C here today, with plenty of sunshine and no wind. Ideal snowshoeing weather - cold enough to keep the snow from falling off the trees, but not so chilly as to make hiking uncomfortable.

Plenty of signs of animal activity as well, mostly in the form of rabbit tracks. At one point I almost stepped on a resting grouse that took off about 3" from my face. That was startling!

Best,

- Mike

I love the cold and the snow. Wish we'd get that much where I live. Thanks for sharing.

Great pictures! That is beautiful scenery. I have never seen anything like that in person. Would love to experience it sometime...briefly.

They closed schools Friday where I am because it was gonna be below freezing Thursday night and it had rained Thursday during the day. Friday morning, bone dry and cold but I guess schools were already shut down. We don't like cold here.

I've been in woods that looked like that in upstate New York, but not so deep underfoot. One time I broke through the crust in Central Park in New York City and found myself up to my waist in snow.

You're right about heating up. I always stop to let some heat out before I sweat too much. Any exercise and good insulating clothes will do it.

Some great pics there buddy, truly a winter wonderland !

Love the knife pics as well !!!!!

your making me cry Mentor. I LOVE winters like that. I grew up with winters like that EVERY year, before being ripped up from my roots and plunked into hell (vancouver BC)

I havent seen a winte rlike that in over 20 years.

:(

Great pictures, Mike! I am extremely envious. We have maybe 1/2" here. I want at least a foot and a half. My Redfeathers are sitting in the back room and bitching 24/7.

I need 2 things, right now - get rid of this cold/flu/scarkatolis of the blow hole, (whatever the hell it is) and at least a foot and a half of nice powder. Three feet would be better.

Doc

I hope you sent some up for Doc Canada. I believe he was complaining about not getting any.;)

I see Doc chimed in while I was typing. Oops.

Shoot, Doc. I hope you get some decent ground cover and manage to shake your bout of SARS.

Bushman5, I hear you. If I were deprived of this weather for a few years, I think I would go a bit crazy. Mind you, when I see the hiking photos from you guys on the West Coast, I get jealous too.

All the best,

- Mike

It looks really pretty. Great pics, Mike, which is the only way I would ever get to see it. It was 75º F here today: not much chance of snow.

Thanks for sharing.
