Huge props to Dr. David Darom for his amazing generosity in opening my eyes to the high end collectible custom knife world, through his extraordinarily high quality book: Modern Custom Knives- The Great Collections.

Wow, what an amazing effort, and what excellent results! I'd like to give David a big :thumbup::thumbup: for his huge contribution to the world of custom/handmade knives.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves knives:D

Hey, Lorien, now you need to add the other three books plus DDD's fine effort regarding the knives of Edmund Davidson and soon to come those of Tim Hancock.

BTW -- try to get your hands on the 5 books by Jim Weyer -- Knives: Points of Interest

Yes, David's books give us knife nuts something to look forward to. :)

I recently got the "Points of Interest" series (minus volume III) :( and they are also fantastic.

If anyone has a volume III they want to let go please contact me.

These types of books do wonders in promoting and advancing the custom knife community.

I can't wait to show this book to my wife. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words- so I can finally shut up already!

Good thread,Lorien.
I only have one of DDD's books,Custom Fixed-Blade Knives from the Amazon link Joss stuck up a while back but definitely plan on getting the others.
Have a couple of the Points of Interest(Weyer),no Volume III either Kevin but watching the Bay,BRL's Vol 4 and David Boye's and Wayne Goddard's knifemaking books, the Flayderman Bowie book and assorted others.
Just a start compared to a lot of you guys but a start at least.

Doug :)

They are very high quality books. Even the later pressings. I will continue to look forward to future editions. Out of the first four, I actually still need to get fixed blades..

I can't stress enough how much better photos on the printed page look compared to burning one's eyes out looking at a computer screen. The photos in this book are incredible.

Hello Lorien,

It was a great pleasure to send one of my books to someone who never ever
had a chance to see any one of them.....

Wish I could do some magic and just for once get to see my books for the
first time.... I would love to have that experience...... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

getting that book in the mail was an almost magical experience.
one can only get so much from a computer screen. That book has really opened my eyes in more ways than one.
David, thanks again for your generosity!

receiving Dr. Darom's gift has been both a blessing and a curse.

The evening before the book arrived in the mail, I wrapped myself around a tree whilst on my regular Thursday night ride. My buddy's been working on a new trail, and some of the landing transitions for the jumps he built were dry and duffy- not very dependable. Anyway, I misjudged one of them and stoved my shoulder into a tree. Since then, my back and especially my neck has been aching and sleep has been really hard to come by. Adding to this pain filled situation is that my shop manager is gone for a few days, checking out the Pemberton Music Festival. This means I get to work a continuous twelve day week. I hate painkillers, but I've had to resort to ibuprofen in order to function.

So, I've been reading this book, actually apart from the captions I've read almost all of it, and my painful, semi sleepless nights have been accompanied by images from the book and all these names and dates associated with custom knives floating around in my head.

Well, this book has been a great companion and learning tool, but I think it's also giving me these crazy lucid dreams of amazing knives and innovative people. Anyway, I'm sure this doesn't mean much to you, but it's been quite a week for me- all starting with a trip to the post office.:)

After her bath tonight, I asked my four year old daughter what she wanted to have read to her. Mom's out for the night, and I was figuring on some Suess or Berenstain Bears or what have you, but she told me she wanted to read daddy's 'knife book'.
She loves the book and we look at it together often, especially in the morning before I leave for work, but never as a bedtime book.

At first I was very protective of it, since it was a gift from someone who only knows me through the forum, and it's very special to me (Thanks again David:thumbup:) But over time, I've realized that the book's value is in its use, not in sitting in its protective folder.

Anyway, we settled in and went through the book, me trying to tell her what bolsters are and showing her how if I hold the pages of the book just so, how damascus works, and her getting more and more animated! She was freaking out, saying how this knife is so pretty and that one is so cool. Well, it was just great, really fired me up.

I've been getting a little worried because money is tight, and I've been thinking that I can't really afford to be taking off to go to some knife show in the States. I told my wife as much, and she would hear none of it!

Well, the gift of this book has been like a talisman for me.

And Warenski's 'Jambiya' dagger is my holy grail!

Lorien, I forgot that you lived in Vancouver. I was there a few months after 9/11. Beautiful, beautiful place with fresh smelling air.

Thats adorable about your daughter. I did the bolster thing with my ex girlfriend and she finally knows what they are. It was tricky.

Very nice story, Lorien, I have to one day combine a collection of such
anecdotes somewhere in one of my books. They are piling up.....

The bottom line is, will you be at the BLADE Show in May 2009?
I shall be there with Tim Hancock, introducing his new book.

Maybe share a room with someone and save on that?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
