An answer in search of a question?

You find it odd that knife fanatics would talk about the bits they don't like as well as the bits they do? Calm down, none of us has the power to eliminate any of these features and I doubt we would if we could. I will, however, quite happily and loudly let manufacturers know which features I'm willing to pay for and which I'm not. Nothing wrong with you preferring a different feature set, but claims of features being taboo because we don't all like them is pretty damn dramatic.

Calm down? Lol. What about my post made you think i wasnt calm? The whole point of this thread is to bring attention the features people to find useless in a knife. And i didnt do anything different than anyone else in this thread but have a unique opinion. I simply feel its all relative to the individual and that just because i dont like a feature doesnt mean its truly pointless to anyone but me. If you get this riled up over my use of the word taboo, i would suggest a nice long vacay in colorado and come back when your head is cloudy. You gotta remember man you cant begin to pretend to know my emotional state when reading my posts as there is no way to impart emotion or attitude on my words but those you choose to project upon them. So maybe its not I in need of calming?

Thank goodness you came along to let us know which opinions were appropriate to hold and which features we're allowed to criticize.

And its a good thing you are hear to police the whole thread and criticise the opinions. High five!

I'm quite amused that you are doing exactly what you accused me of doing.

And accusing me of doing exactly what I was pointing out Scurvy was doing.

Guys, can we please stay on topic. This has been a good thread so far, let's not side track it with personal bickering and get it locked by the mods.

Wording is everything grasshopper. My word eluded to the possibility that you were the one in need of calming. There is a difference between telling someone that they need to calm down ( this assumes). And stating that it is possible that it might be the other way around ( my wording suggests a possibility rather than certainty).

Well lets be fair man. When someone intentionally starts a thread for the sole purpose of calling out what people DONT like in a knife its almost destined to go this way. Kinda like if you dont have something nice to say dont say it at all? When the thread starts with a topic all ready rooted in negativity its hard to keep it on the positive side.

Please show me in my OP where I mentioned anything about features that people do not like in a knife?

Just out of curiosity, what seemingly indispensable features on modern knives do you think (in your opinion before anyone gets their feelings hurt) are more of a trend or fashion feature than an actual needed feature. In other words, what currently popular features do you feel may be "an answer in search of a question"?

I'll start. Lockbar over travel stops: an answer in search of a question (IMO).

Discuss.

I simply asked, for the purpose of discussion, what features seem to be popular, but might be unnecessary. More of an inquiry into where certain features may have got their origin from, not about whether people like the features or not.

Engaging in personal attacks, and bickering, having nothing to do with the topic at hand, and add nothing to the discussion.

Listen, you asked a question in your original post of which I gave my opinion. It was AFTER I stated that opinion that someone jumped on my nuts and made assumptions about me, my intent and my emotional state to which I defended myself. And my feelings are that despite how you worded your original post most peoples responses are going to be based on their likes. Because features people find unnecessary are usually because they dont like them and therefore dont see them as needed.

I feel you have done to me exactly what someone else did to you.

I'm sorry if you felt that I intentionally set out to stir up controversy, or that my thread idea was Rooted in negativity. This was not at all my intention.

Locks have been around since folding knives were invented. What do you think the spring is doing? It is keeping the knife open. Try taking off the spring on a slippie and see if the blade doesn't flop around.

There's the balisong too. It's been here a long time. Simple and strong and not about to go out of style.

Really? Because my Higo Nokami is a folding knife and they have never had a spring. I also think Locks are useless.

All this pissing and moaning is unnecessary...

Agreed. I'm stopping.

So on topic: Autolawks, or any other type of secondary lock, doesn't really bother me, but I've never had a lock of any type fail on me (that I can remember off hand) so they may be unnecessary.

Amen, and thank you.

Now, back to subject, I don't understand the insistent demand for stainless steel blades in general. When I was a kid, the best knife I had was a discolored Old Timer 3 bladed pocket knife. It was the best because it was easy to sharpen, and it managed to stay sharp for a long time, as long I was willing to take care of it.

I do understand the desire to keep things looking all bright and new looking, and to do it with a minimal amount of effort. I just didn't think it took that much effort to maintain a pocket knife.

Stainless steel isn't a new thing, and does serve a purpose. If you've never spent time in the Deep South during the summer, you have no idea what the word humidity means. :D

In this environment, working outdoors, you will sweat. Heck, you will sweat just sitting outside. Carbon steel in your pocket can corrode very quickly, and severely. I'm not just talking cosmetics, but actual pitting and damage to the blade type of corrosion. At least that is my experience.

(mostly) Interesting thread!

Obviously, this is massive YMMV territory. Speaking only for myself a) I find pretty much every feature on a modern knife to be unneeded and b) the threat is worthless without pictures.

The Opinel #9 Inox handles absolutely everything I ask from a pocket knife.

It's insanely light and carries wonderfully in the bottom of my pocket. I've tried pocket clips and just couldn't take to them. The low weight means it still comes with me even on the lightest of backpacking ventures.

It's tougher than any other folding knife I've used, including a ton of different lockbacks. The design is able to withstand every bit of hard cutting (strong opening or lateral force) I can put on a blade without developing any blade play or wobble.

It's easy and safe to both one hand open and close. The fact that it's a friction folder at heart means that the spring is never active.

It's people friendly. I always get compliments and "Can I see that?" reactions when I use it in public in urban/suburban settings full of knife-skeered people. I can and have used it in restaurants for cutting steaks with no issue. In this way, it is more useful than flippers, which I find tend to scare people.

It's dirt and sand proof. I spend a lot of time on beaches during the summer and working in my yard spring through fall. Dirt and sand don't foul the workings.

It's replaceable. I sharpen the crap out of mine and replace them every couple of years. <shrug> It's a knife, not an heirloom nor investment nor statement of my manhood.

For me: lock-bar stabilizers. I kind of like the way they look on many knife designs, but totally unnecessary. As for super steels, while they aren't really necessary for my uses - they add a dimension to the collectibility. I enjoy trying new steels out and collecting different versions of my favorite knife designs.

From a traditional knife perspective, any design element that tries to make a traditional knife one-handed operable. Not sure how to articulate this, but I am thinking of the Case Russlock here. You could argue about whether it is a traditional knife or not. But adding that extended blade tang, lock, and in some cases pocket clips to a traditional slipjoint-type frame just creates a strange Frankenblade that for me is kind of - meh.

We knuts have so many choices today. Get what you like.
btw, I just discovered that my higonokami can be held and used safely in the foil and the fence grip, due to a well designed blade tang.
