An Awesome Day with the Kiddies

you're in the same boat as I too would have to leave my 3 yr old with the wife to reek havoc.. :D

looks like good times, I'll have to take my son out next week when it cools down a bit.. hes been itching to go out.. bigtime.......

my daughter on the other hand could care less.

That last picture of them around the camp fire, your daughter in her little crossed legged sitting position - that, my friend, is what life is about.

Loved the pics.

Thanks man. That is honestly, my attraction to the woods. It reminds me what is really important, and I need that often. :)

Great post Brian!

What's all the stuff on your son's belt there?

It is something new I am trying out. A few key items on a locking carabiner, so that they are on the body. It contains.

1) A bic with kydex cap (mine has a firesteel).
2) A waterproof aluminum capsule (third item down). It contains a wetfire cube and some pre-shredded waxed jute.
3) 25' of bank line. Actually, the picture shown is a nylon cord, and I just replaced it with bank line. If you haven't used this stuff, it is awesome. It can also me separated into 3 smaller strands.

Those were the main things I wanted on there. But, there are 2 items that never seem in a good place. So, I added these because they don't seem to be a hindrance.

4) Whistle (I obviously wanted my kids on them, but mine always seemed buried in the pack somewhere.
5) Gorilla brand duct tape. It is wrapped up around a long cotter pin, and then has a keyring put through the eye to hang it.

My daughter has one as well, but her pants did have loops to hook it on, so she is carrying it on the baldric. Hers is minus the lighter and cordage at the present time. The whistle is the important thing for her at her age.

I can post some up close pics of this kit if you are interested.

When you dehydrate the beans and rice do you just spread out the mix on the rack of a dehydrator? how thin for how long?

I am not real scientific when I dehydrate stuff like this. Stuff like apples, I have the times down. But with this, I just wing it.

I actually spread it out on fruit leather trays, about the thickness that you would do frosting. After a couple hours (it is easy to see it dry) some will be dry, but the bottom would take a while. So I take a small spatula and flip it, and it speeds up the process.

BTW, I seriously downgraded my camera to a much smaller one that I will actually carry and use. It is hard to tell that I went from a 10 pound SLR with a $1500 lens, to a point and shoot, eh?

Thanks, I'm getting a dehydrator for Christmas and I'm looking for ideas.

Nice shots. I go back and forth with cameras...if I am going hiking alone I sometimes take the SLR...depends on the terrain I'm headed to, and the pictures I want. In easy terrain I don't mind the extra weight when I have a reason for it when I leave...and I have wished I had brought it some of the times I didn't. If I am taking Alayna to the woods I definitely feel more comfortable taking my little Canon P&S for the lighter weight and higher mobility. And if anything goes wrong I still have my SLR for work and my P&S only costs half as much as my SLR :)

When I go out at night for artistic shots I always take the Nikon. It's interesting that the extended warranty plan I have will cover it being fixed or replaced as long as I have the pieces, but doesn't cover theft or fire. So...if I am ever mugged while out at night I plan on acting like I'm going to hand over the camera then repeatedly beat them over the head with it...as long as I pick up the pieces it's covered :D

Great post and pics. I can't wait for my boy to get a little older, but hate for it to happen at the same time. Lunch looks good, have never tried anything dehydrated like that
