I currently live in the Southeastern US. I use the Peterson Field Giude, Eastern/Central US for Medicinal plants. It is very good I keep it in my BOB.
I don't rely on any book 100%. I use a bunch of medicinal plant ID books.
I have done a bunch of other walks with authorities and friends. Once you get into this, it is funny, but a great wealth of knowledge is hidden in older women who love to garden. Garden club types, every town has one of these. They all know a lot about plant IDing there are sublties to look for.
Actually, Patriqq is right to a degree. Certain plant can be IDed by a particular smell or texture. But to solely rely on your senses without tons of other experiences would not be wise.
