Whats this in my mail, i said to myself. I pick out a big shiny catalog out of my mailbox. Oh its the coldsteel catalog.

So like any knife nut i proceed to read on.

These are a few excerpts:

"Cold Steel the sharpest strongest knives in the world" :barf:

"Have you ever dreamed of being able to harness the cutting and peirceing power of a sword and distill it down into folder small enough to fit into your pocket? Thats the essence of our new POCKET SWORD, the talwar"

"when you purchase one of our new Black Talon tactical folders there's a phrase ou will start hearing more and more "man, thats one mean looking knife"

"Why buy a trial master? That's simple. Because it is the most knife for the money EVER COMMERCIALLY BUILT!!!!!!!" :jerkit:

"sarongs arent just ordinary items of clothing theyre blankets, sunshades, cloaks, backpacks, and a formidable self-defense tool as well"

" cold steel has always contended that the karambit is a speacialized style of knife with unique but limitecd uses. It is also, however, quite popular. so ------we proudly introduce the steel tiger."

I could go on with this all day but it would be pointless. The catalog shows shots of lynn with boars he brought down with spears from treestands (ostensibly because the government is smart enough to deny him second amendman rights). This is exactly what the knife world doesnt need. phrases like "lethal penetration" scare the bajeebers outa sheeple.

Creepy business pratices and less than sound ethics aside this guy is realy doing things that could hurt the knife comunity.

Sorry needed to vent ill hop off my soap box.

Hello Razor,

I just went out to look at the catalog and was favorably impressed by the product line. I've owned several Cold Steel knives for years and they have been excellent. I even sent a couple to Iraq for an unnamed soldier.

It's hard to argue in favor of Lynn Thompson's advertising strategy and bragging but, I take solace from these thoughts:

He's invested his money in his business and it's his capital at risk, not mine.

I think there are other makers today who have really pulled the wool over the eyes of the buying public and are just more subtle than Lynn Thompson.

He's not dating my daughter and he's not coming to dinner on Sunday.

I've sent two Cold Steel SRKs to buddies in Iraq who have put them through hell and they say they are great knives. A lot of their product is garbage but they do make a few good knives.

Remember the report in the catalog a year or so ago, when it seemed like all of LT's African guides and companions died at around the same time? Didn't that seem weird? I can't help thinking that LT sent condolence money to the first guy's family and the next thing you know, every guy in the village that knew LT "died". :D

Savage used the same B.S at the turn of the 19th century to sell his 303 cartridge as the " only chambering to take any animal in the world " people who didn't know any better bought the sales pitch....now we have forums
to learn the truth....well sometimes. L.O.L

All things considered and aside :p CS does have some knife models that are great for the money. Not retail, of course  The Gunsite, Voyager, and Recon 1 lines (since they upgraded the Recon 1 steel) all all good folding knives. Their Carbon V fixed blades, by and large, are very good knives for the bux spent.

Unless my memory fails in my advanced age, I believe the .303 Savage was successful in taking elephant, rhino, hippo, grizzly, and all manner of big, dangerous critters (it goes without saying, such feats took "grit").

Just because something is over-hyped, does not mean it is incapable of fullfilling the function.

if you dont like Cold Steel then why would you request there catolog. a bit over the top mayby, but there knives are great and have fullfilled my expectations....

I have a Cold Steel Recon tanto fixed blade that has served me well on camping trips (for cutting wood and camp chores), the black coating has not wore off yet. Pretty good for $35.

Screw the knife industry, look at what he's doing to the Sarong industry.

Soon those evil swatches of cloth women have been using as coverups at the beach will be outlawed, and full view of the bikini will be restored as is right and correct.

you think that catalouge was bad? i was in a blade store yesterday and they had a video demonstrating their products... slashing meat, hitting stuff with a baton, hanging weights on their blades, throwing shovels... it was ridiculous.

So let me ask and why was that bad? Just showing the uses the products can be put to and how strong the locks are? I know for a fact that my dad and his brother while in WWII in the south pacific theatre thought there entrenching tools made great weapons. I have seen other video's that weren't done half as well with instructors cutting meat and rib bones and no one gave them grief.

For instance I am currently carrying a Recon1 with the g10 and aus8a steel. Best bang for the buck out there. As I have stated before about this knife I have literally dozens both fixed and folder along with some customs I can carry. I am carrying this one for the time being. It is made extremely well with fit and finish as good as any prod. folder out there. I keep a Recon scout next to my bed with my .45acp underneath the bed table. I have an original Master Hunter that I bought the second year they were offered. The blade is tarnished as hell but the BEST hunting knife I have owned. Last but not least my XL and Lg. Voyagers from like 90 or 91. Bought them at Jumbo Sports a few yrs. before they went out of business. They are as good today as when I bought them save for a bit of sharpening and a few scratches. Granted L.T.'s claims can rub people the wrong way at times, but I am buying the prod. on there own merits and not L.T. and his b.s. keepem sharp

All my CS knives have been great to me. I'm glad I'm not a narrow minded person to judge them based on a corny video or else I might not have bought them.
