Andy,
No sir. I cut them by hand. Like you, my friend, my customers value the hand completed product. But now that I have templates it is going much smoother. I make my templates out of a rigid substrate and make a quick trace with a scratch awl and them cut it by hand. I then take it over to the table and get to work. I have been contemplating a few sewing machines, a skiver, and a clicker press - but as of now - my customers demand hand work and I am pleased to provide it.
I put this out to the Fiddleheads some time ago and expected exactly what I got. Amazing people sending amazing knives and expecting little to nothing in return. You have cultivated that atmosphere Andy with your other makers and I think that attracts the awesome customers you have. I have never been disappointed to work with any of the Fiddleheads. It's the main reason I stick around. You guys and gals are amazing. And I am truly honored to put needle and thread to hide to make things for you.
I have to tell you. The real advantage I have is Robert at Fiddleback Outpost. He, like me, is a complete ass - which makes working together so easy. He bags and tags what comes in -sends them to me - and makes sure he gets them back. The guy is a bull dog for the customer. He quality controls what comes out of my shop one more time and gets it into the customers hands in a clean presentation worthy box. I do make a little less per unit, but I have found the pay off to be well worth it for me.
The reason this has allowed me to make more is that Robert handles all of the leg work for me. We have made specific designs and I can work on those designs. We make a limited offering to perfect what we have going and allow me to branch out and be creative on my own. That leaves the door open to other designs Andy and I think it would be a blast to make those happen. It has been an honor to work with you on the Arete and I look forward to more collaboration in the future.
Much respect to all of you and a heart felt thanks to all who have helped me throughout the years.
Jason
