.....well, 30 years ago I hiked over 800 miles of the Appalachian trail with just a SAK and a folding Sven saw.

Today they hike with tissue thin nylon, space food, dull nail clippers (might hurt themselves, safety first) and have thrown common sense to the wind.
Hiking a long trail is different than a survival situation. The explorers of this continent wouldn't have gotten by with a SAK and sneakers as there were no food drop points along the way.
