The reason they are so expensive to make is the huge and unneccessary amount of paperwork and bacground afety cvhecks that need to be doen before they are used anywhere near a patient, combined with low volumes and a captive market
 
The medical device industry has certain requirements for alloys used for instruments, especially if they are implanted. The paperwork trail for implantable devices is incredible.

I think that a 440c or 316L would be a good choice... or why not titanium if ou are making our own?
