Hey IG, would you consider selling 1.25 links?? I'd love to have a full link just to have (I have some form of mental acquisition problem), and about a 1/4 of a link for some WI.
Robert

Good score! Looks definatly like you got some wrought iron, infact a bunch! I paid almost that much per link but mine are better......... :D

What would/could you guys use that wrought iron for? I don't know much about forging/smithing.

Robert just send me $$ for postage and you got it. I'll let you know what it weights. The junkyard has aleast 2 tons of it. You can have a few links if you want. The links are 8" long. Grasshoppa was sanding, ecthing and polishing some. Oh he also was beating the hell out of it. :D

Ray, I got this from a good source (ME). That this chain was from the very last whaling ship that left this port. If you ever read Moby Dick you will understand. We where the whaling capital of the world back in the 1800’s.
:D :D

Cool to have a piece like that that of course has to have some history, but even better if ya know what the history is. Any thoughts on making some kind of period knife with that as fittings and etching name of that ship in to it, or stamping it in the sheath?

And no, haven't seen you post work liek that before George, so would understand if ya don't, just think that'd be a cool idea. And not like you'll run out any time soon. :)

Yep, cool idea. The history of New Bedford is correct. But I was BS’g about the chain. My customer that I make whales teeth knives for, is telling me that be has some of the copper plates off the USS Constitution when they replaced them back in the 60’s. Now that’s the truth and I am try to get some off of him. :)

IG, One of the links of chain I got is stamped "Mayflower".........
Listen: This chain was really found under Plymouth Rock when they moved it the first time. :D

so are there any other wasy to determine if it's wrought iron? other than spark testing? i beat the hell out of it and it moved pretty easily under the hammer, but i dind't find a problem with it braking apart like i've heard it does.... maybe i didn't have it "cool" enough when i tried.

Grasshoppa: I was talking to Gary and he was telling me that the webbing is probably cast and it was shrink fitted to the links.

Hey, great! You bet I'd like a few of them, Doesn't matter how many links, etcIG, just let me know the charges and I'll get a MO to you fast! This is cool!

Michael, Normally the anchor chain is a much higher grade wrought iron than the wagon wheel which is pretty tricky to forge. I was able to forge a letter opener out of the anchor chain. I also tried a hawk but blew it apart trying to drift the eye. Just by looking at the chain IG got I can see the layers in it and thats a sure way to tell. Just had a few beers so if it don't make sence I understand.....

plenty of sense.... i'm usedto trying to make sense of IG, when he rambles on and on and on and on :D ;) good to know there's some good stuff there, now when you come down in august you can fill your pockets for what seems to be a pretty low price.
