“Ancient Safari”

This is a style of knife that I make for sale in several specialty shops in the ski and tourist areas here in Colorado. It’s the “Ancient Safari” which refers to the fact that it is made from ancient Mammoth Ivory Bark as well as pre-ban Elephant Ivory Bark. Since you see elephants on modern day safaris wouldn’t it be amazing to go on an ancient safari to hunt for mammoth (with either a rifle or a camera).

The reason I’m posting this knife here and not selling it in Aspen, or Vail, or Steamboat Springs, is because she's not perfect. I know, I know, most professional knifemakers never, ever make mistakes. Well, at least most of them won’t admit to making them. Wink;), nudge! Okay other makers, own up to it ;); you haven't made enough knives if you've never gotten ahead of yourself and found a problem when it was too late! :D

Here is a word to the wise – Do Not Answer the Phone When you are Cutting Ivory Scales! Don’t do it. Because if you allow yourself to get interrupted and distracted, you’re just asking for trouble. I normally get $425 for this knife in the specialty shops – but that’s when they are perfect. This one is beautiful (even if I do say so myself – the ivory alone is as amazing as it was expensive) but the phone rang when I was cutting the ivory and when I glued her up...I found that the spacers weren’t a mirror image of each other, and it was too late to try to pull the ivory off without damaging it.

Of course it’s cosmetic only, but you can tell that they're off a bit when viewing from the top.

It’s not until you turn her over that you really see it.

However, I still think that someone could really appreciate this knife, so I discounted it and made it available here.

Note: I've posted this piece in a few locations online so the first "I'll take it” gets it based on timestamp. A reply here precedes PM’s and emails.

Just received it today. What a nice knife!!! I have been watching Wayne's posts for awhile and this knife has the combo of materials and the blade shape I really like.
Thanks Wayne. I really like the blade shape and proportions. It is a beauty.

You have a few more knifes before you catch up to 6. I have been up to Mr. Jarretts shop and looked at many of his Knifves in progress and he is a class act. I hope you enjoy your knife
