Hey Buddy! Yeah, it was with a heavy heart I had to let it go, also for financial reasons only. I "downgraded" in the Burt Foster line up to one of his new water cut Blue Collar Hunters. I just love Burt's work and am now on the path to save up for when my turn comes on the custom list.

That's fun ! I contacted Burt a week ago to tell him how I appreciate his work and he was impressed how far this bowie has traveled ! This one needs some rest now !

One again, thanks for all the comments but all the credit goes to Burt.

Hey Sebastien. Hope you won't consider this a hijack but since you like Burt's work so much, here's a photo of my Blue Collar Hunter...

A hijack ? Are you kidding ??? Please feel free posting as many Foster's knives as you want Stuart ! ;)
Your Blue Collar is a great looking knife and I bet he must be fantastic in hand.
I remember the picture of a Blue Collar Hunter with oak handle scales. Those scales were featuring some horizontal and very regular veins .One of the best looking wood handle I've ever seen....

Would that curly oak Blue colar be this one by any chance?

As it happens, one of my projects this weekend was to practice sharpening - and that oak BC - which was finally in need of some sharpening - was the chosen subject.

I am happy to report that it is now as wickedly sharp as the day I got it from Burt and ready to do it's laser-like cutting thing again.

Thanks for the picture Roger that's exactly the knife I was thinking about !
Stuning piece, congratulations !

BTW, I have a question : this one is featuring a convex blade geometry, right ? What kind of stones and techniques are you using to sharpen that kind of knives without scratching the whole blade ? I always found this method quite scary for the blade in terms of esthetics.
I personally use a mousepas with different sand papers to sharpen my Fällknivens.

Thanks

beautiful knife,

and other than the fact that it looks 100% better than the one im working on, i have a very similar knife im actually working on today.

:o:o......gonna be kind of embarassed to ever post mine now!!

again spectactular knife,

andrew

I'm no sharpening expert - really I'm just learning how to do it - and I know it is a subject that generally brings varied oopinions on what is "right" or not.

Anyway, the way Dan showed me how to do it was to make sequential passes on the stone, varying the angle of the blade and the pressure being applied.

First pass - shallow angle, harder pressure.
Second pass - slightly steeper angle, medium pressure.
Third pass - steeper again, light pressure.

This helps maintain the convex profile of the edge, instead of forcing into straight beveled profile.

Of course, you have to do both sides:

I'm not really sure what kind of stones I was using - except that the one pictured is the moast coarse. It was followed by a finer stone, then stropping on a rubber strop impregnated with some type of fine abrasive.

As for scratches, this knife came with a belt finish to begin with, and has been scratched through significant use since - so I wasn't worried about it. That said, I don't believe I ever let the blade flats contact the stones - that aspect is much easier than it looks.

Cheers,

Roger
