After testing the water with my toes for a few years here, I took my first steps on the knife-making road. It seems I never have enough time between my job and the farm, and all of my outdoor hobbies, but there's just too much challenge in it for me to pass the road by.
And my fault is that too much terrific information, as provided on this site, has me going in one direction one day, and another the next.
Yesterday I managed to find a 1942 Delta (Milwaukee) DP220 drill press in nice shape, other than a repaint that was peeling. I scooped up both that Delta and a rather nice old Delta 1/3HP motor for $60.

Then I went to Harbor Fright with my 20% coupon and picked up a 1"x 30" belt grinder for $35. That should work for a few sessions until I fabricate a 2" x 72" grinder. I have my grandfathers anvil, leg vise, large bench vise, and I managed to get my hands on a 5' piece of 10" ID steel pipe, and a 31" piece of 14" ID pipe. Now I need to buy some Kaowool, ITC100, and firebricks. I haven't decided whether to make or buy burners yet. I've done a fair bit of black iron work (including the propane system for my house) and have all the tools necessary for commercial work, but I can't decide on a design. I'm favoring venturis such as the JF#1 and the Graham because I will be banished to the steel equipment shed which has no power.
Iffen I make a smallish 2-burner horizontal out of the 10" pipe (say, 18-22" long), and a larger heat treating forge out of the 14" pipe, would I be going in the right direction? With easy steels like 1084 and such, I figured I could sleeve the items in a smaller pipe for more even heat treating. That gives me an inexpensive start until I develop (or fail!). Am I on the right track? Thanks.
