I'm still in the eastern time zone, visiting family in Knoxville, and we went to the Museum of Appalachia today. Very interesting. And there was one little display that was a little bit "biblical" of you recall that verse about beating swords into plowshares and bending spears into pruning hooks.

It seems that bayonets were not all that useful during the Civil War, and were even less useful in peacetime, and it would have been a shame to let perfectly good steel go to waste.
