Six months or so ago, I barely saw a knife in Leeds market. Recently, it’s been almost awash with the things (maybe this is just down to Muggins here)! Many are junk for sure, but I’ve found a few worth buying. I bought these as a job-lot today.

The star of the half dozen is made by John Petty & Sons of Sheffield. It still has excellent W & T, and is a knife I’ll certainly carry. A post I saw on another forum made by one of our esteemed Sheffield knife experts here, says that a John Petty Whittler with near-identical covers, is listed in the company’s 1920 catalogue as being made using ivory. Opinions on the material used here would be welcome.

The maker of the next knife is not given, but it is marked ‘Made in Germany’ and from ‘Warranted Forged Steel’. Sadly, the main blade appears to have snapped at some point, but someone clearly cared enough about the little knife to do something with it, and put a decent edge on it too. W & T are still good.

The MOP handled knife is well made and still in good shape, but unfortunately it carries no maker’s mark at all. Sweet little knife.

The even smaller knife is an old Richards. Unfortunately the first spray of WD40 left the blade drooping :(

The other two knives are also made by Richards, and as can be seen, they are the same pattern. Cheap knives, but in reasonable shape.

The John Petty is a jewel. I like the old ones with history. Always nice to see what you have bagged on your sojourns,Jack

The JP&S certainly looks like 1v0ry to me. It has those tell-tale striations.
Very nice!

Great haul Jack. I think the scales on the Petty knife are a faux ivory. The grain pattern is very regular and there is a little shrinkage around the bolsters. Just my 2p. Either way, a very nice knife.

Thanks for your kind comments and help guys, very much appreciated. I know virtually nothing about ivory. On the pile side the grain pattern is slightly less regular, the lines are a little less straight. I don't know what the teeth tap test is, but I just tapped it against my teeth. Now I have a mouth that tastes of WD40! :D
I'm very pleased with it either way though :)

Hi Jack
It looks as though you had a busy day! life is good for you eh?
That was a neat little handful, I too would pick out the John Petty as the pick of the day, I too think that its Faux Ivory, the lines are far too straight in comparison to the real deal, even so a nice little knife, ready for another lifetime of use once you sharpen "er up.

Wow Jack, that JP&S is a little beauty! We have a very large fleamarket near my house in Hartville, Ohio, but I haven't been able to get there yet this season. I'm hoping to head out on Memorial day to hunt up some slippies. Nice haul!

Hi Duncan,
Well it was good today! :D Particularly as I wasn't really 'hunting'! ;) It sounds like my knife is perhaps a later model than the one I saw referred to. Twenty years ago I had a big section of mammoth ivory sitting in my living room and wish I'd payed more attention to it now (and hung onto it)! :D Thanks for your help :)

Thanks Dan. Good luck

Hi Jack, nice haul ;-) I agree, the covers are "french" ivory (celluloid).

Best regards

Robin

Looks like a good haul, Jack. All are nice knives, but I really love the little metal utility with the screw driver blade and shackle. Looks like some tradesman gave it many years of use, from the wear on the screw driver tool. But they all look like somebody's long term companion.:thumbup:

The teeth tap test is useful for telling bone vs. composite. Bone will clink against your teeth. Composite will thunk. I reckon same goes for ivory, though I've never had reason to doubt my one ivory knife, and I've no faux ivory that I suspected of being genuine.

Looks like old Ivorine to me, a good quality faux ivory that is a form of celluloid.

Look real close for crosshatching, which may indicate real ivory, or if the knife seems to feel heavier than you think it should be.

Forget the hot pin test, it won't work well for many of the faux ivories. If you think it's real ivory best bet is to find a friendly antiques dealer and see if they will give an opinion.

By the way, it's been a long time since I've visited your island, is that 10p the current production size, if I recall they shrank in the last few years, just trying to get an idea of scale...

Thanks for the help fellers.

Yep, that the scaled down one, I used the edge of it to open the screwdriver blade on one of the Richards knives. It's exactly the same size as a US Quarter :)

Thanks Carl. Yes, I think they've all been well used and well carried knives :)

Just sent you an e-mail.

Thanks P. I wish I knew where they all came from :)

Thank you :D I've had two small Richards recently that didn't have the trademark one-piece bolsters and covers. It seemed OK when I first cursorarily examined it, but it seems that rust was holding it together.
