Back around the very end of August my cardiologist told me if I kept on going like I was that I was going to go into renal failure and that I desperately needed to lose some weight. He also told me that my lips looked dusky and that he was going to send me to pulmanory rehab, needless to say *That* got mine *And* Barbie's attention in a hurry!!!!
About that time one of the trainers at our health club had already talked me into going back into the therapy pool so I had already started that as well as watching what I ate because I had hit the 299 mark on our digital scales and I was determined to never reach 300 pounds!!!! :grumpy:
I haven't started the pulmanory rehab proper yet as it's a six week program of breathing, walking, free weight exercise, and stretching to build strength and stamina.
By not being in the program proper yet means I'm getting a headstart because we've already talked to the dietician and one of the physical therapists that's going to see to my training.
She added a great deal to the exercises I was already doing in the therapy pool.
I also had my ear's stapled in order to help me lose weight. I got on the scales when we got back from water therapy today and I weighed in at 259.2 pounds!!!!!!!
That's 39.8 pounds I've lost since September 2nd and Tuesday we walked a mile and half in an hour and ten minutes because I didn't have to stop and rest every 100 feet or so!!!! :D
My protyme and chem 8 blood tests are looking excellent and I feel better than I have in a mighty long time.
Also when we first started in the therapy pool Barbie would have to help me get undressed and dressed in a utility room by the pool. Two weeks ago I told Barbie I wanted to try it on my own so I went in and showered and dressed myself, even getting my own sock's on by myself, something else I haven't been able to do by myself in the last four years at least!!!!
Methinks I won't be going into renal failure anytime soon.
I guess I wasn't ready to give up yet after all.:D ;)

Oh Yeah, the other good news is that Barbie has been eating the same foods I have as well as going to therapy with me. Barbie is now down to within a couple of pounds of when we first got together some almost 20 years ago.
Needless to say I am very proud of her!!!!

Congratulations to both of you, that's great news! One thing, though -- what is "ear stapling"?

Nova it is a form of accupuncture that's somewhat permanent. The staples are the basic surgery staples that are used to staple incisions and have to be removed by the person that put them in or a Dr.
I just had mine redone today as it's been a month now since I had the proper person put them in. I had it done about three weeks beforehand by one of her helpers and it wasn't working all that well. The staples go inside your earlobes and aren't that visible.:)

I'm glad to hear the good news, Yvsa, especially after the post about your daughter. You all have my prayers, BTW.

Interesting to hear that they are doing that type of thing stateside. Some Chinese practitioners here do something similar here, except they use seeds -- about the size of radish seeds -- and tape them to the ear lobe, where they stay for several days.

what kind of diet are you on? as in, what foods, etc. i can tell you that some foods are just scary full of the wrong kind of nutrition. some, are great. in any event, big congrats! it's a hard thing to realize you HAVE to, and sometimes harder to do it, and stay with it.

about what? oh, 8 years ago, i was up to 290s... and over a period of a few months, very quickly, was able to get it down to 199... i then started in on weight training, and am more fierce and strong than ever in college even. put on about 15-20 in muscle. woo. kept at 225 for a long time.

then in the last year, i got to 250ish again, and went back on the wagon. got it down to 225, and am aiming at 210 for a bit, but can't nail that. i'm going to have to cut back on my 1/2 slice of wheat toast and salami slice if i want to lose more :) gah.

Bladite we have cut back on meat and are eating chicken, white fish like Hoki and Perch and such and also eating lots and lots of ground turkey, wonderful stuff and better than ground beef IMO, it has become my favorite meat. We limit the meat intake to 3-4 ounces a day.
Also eat lots of different veggies and that means also a large assortment of them. Barbie and I have found 3 or 4 really good mixes we like with a couple of them being for stir fry but that doesn't mean they can't be steamed.
Limmiting the amount of fats and starches we eat. I'm allowed eight starches a day and it's hard for me to stay under that. Today I ate 11 starches but that was because I ate an extra slice of toast and we had potatoes in our stew this evening.
My dietician limited me to 1,800 calories a day and when the ear staples are working right like they have been for the last month I find it easy to eat 1,100 a day and seldom go over 1,500 a day with my starches limited to six!
I only have eight ounces of milk a day on my oatmeal and rice. I've lost more weight the last month than I ever thought about losing on my own when I first started so I'm a firm believer in the staples! :D

Barbie brought home some t-bone steak taails the other day that were on sale cheap and I ate three ounces and I couldn't hack anymore. I had a greasy taste in my mouth and to top it all off about two hours later I was looking for more fresh fruit than usual as I was already hungry again. It seems like the 3 ounces of ground turkey and an assortment of veggies, we almost always have two selections and sometimes three selections. I introduced my Barbie to Collard Greens and Malt Vinegar and she seems to want them all the time now. ;) I love collard greens as well as mustard and other greens. This next fall I oughta be able to get out and gather some Poke Salat, Docks, Dandelion and maybe some Cleavers for a nice round of wild greens but I'll damned sure have to teach Barbie how to cook them and especially the part about throwing the first two water boilings out!!!! :o :D  ;)

That's wonderful news!!
And it's great that both of you are changing things up for the better.
Some bitter resentment can rize when just one of a couple has to battle weight.
I'm glad you're doing this with the guidence of a dietition. It's easy to get malnurished.

Dang, I'm proud of your both. That's not easy to do.

Be cautious when gathering "wild" greens. Make sure there are not peticides/fertilizers or run off from parks/golf courses nearby.

Best news I've heard this week congratulations. You've given me some hope as I now weigh more than I've ever weighed (over 300:eek: ) and my doctor says I've got to lose.

Whats the ear stapling supposed to actually do? I've heard of stomach stapling, but I thought ear stapling was what you needed after you got married ;)

Congrats, Yvsa:) We all want to keep you around for a very long time:D Best to you and Barbie.

THAT is great news Yvsa... and it is good to read after your other post! I need to start watching what I eat too now that I'm sitting behind a computer instead of hauling camera gear around. I might take up your ground Turkey idea. Too bad I have a whole box of steaks in the freezer...

You and Barb keep up the good work!

Alan

Dang Yvsa, congrats. I'm always hungry. I can't imagine dieting. I guess I'm not applying myself well enough.

What does the ear stapling accomplish? Does it reduce hunger?

I haven't started the pulmanory rehab proper yet as it's a six week program of breathing,

REPLY:Yes breathing is a good thing. :D (Substitute s#it eating grin here.)

Quote:also had my ear's stapled in order to help me lose weight.

REPLY: If stapling your ears has helped you to lose weight it is evident why you gained weight . Most people use the orifice between nose and chin to eat with . :D (Same s#it eating grin.)

=========================================================

A guy is seen in a doctors office bouncing up and down in a chair . Up and down , up and down .

"Why are you doing that?" asks the nurse.

The man replied " The doctor put me on a program of Rectal feeding to control my appetite ."

"Yes I know that says the nurse . Why are you bouncing up and down ?"

The man said. " Oh I am just chewing some gum ."

Thanks Shappa, I always gather greens and other wild foods where there is little danger of anything except for maybe wild animal $hit.;) :D

Shann and Andy the ear stapling does decrease hunger and considerably when they are put in the right place. There are a couple of "doctors" here in Tulsa that have been trained where to put them for proper hunger relief. Once the first ones are in place and seem to quit working as well the staples can be moved a couple of millimeters either way to accomplish your goals to a point. They recommend after being on them three months to go off of them for a month.
And you can eat a full cup of cooked veggies for 50 calories when that huge steak or pork chop contains 55 calories per ounce!!!!:thumbdn:  :(
Eat lots of veggies both cooked and raw and you won't be hungry between meals and if you are eat a fruit instead of a candy bar.
I also started drinking diet soda pop when I found out the diet Barq's root beer tastes as good as their regular. Now I need to find some low sodium flavored soda pop that is diet that tastes good. I wish CocaCola would use Splenda in their original recipe. Coke just doesn't taste the same as it did when I was a kid and they used real sugar instead of corn syrup.:grumpy:

Congratulations Yvsa, glad to hear you're taking care of yourself. These days I have switched to only buying (I'm not going to say eating) meat and vegitables. I agree with you on the ground turkey, between it and buffalo most other meat has disappeared. Salmon is great stuff, I find as well, just dont eat the farmed stuff. Aparently eating farmed salmon more than once every THREE months pushes you over the limit for a dozen or so toxins.
