And the winner of the Talonite Contest Is............................................

For what it is worth, I think that maybe the knife designer ought to specify or approve the knife maker. However I did meet a knife maker named Derek Monroe at the Oregon show. Rob introduced me. Derek has the same sort of elegant curves and feel for the material that Rob does but he uses a much different approach to the decoration. If Rob doesn't want to / can't do it then maybe Derek is worth consideration. His web site is www.dcmunroeknives.com (As with all art, the Internet doesn't begin to do it justice. It is way prettier in real life.)

Congradulations Eric for a fine design, that one caught my eye as well! I wopuld love to make the knife, however........I have a 2 year backlog and I am running behind on my promised delivery dates now so I must respectfully decline. Thanks for the plug though Mike!

Deryk Monroe would be a great choice but makes mostly folders, that guy is going to be going places very soon! How about asking Tom Mayo? He is very familiar with the alloy and is a top shelf maker and can deliver fairly quick. You there Tom?

Thanks Rob! I understand that you have a huge backlog list and i'm happy that you would consider making the knife for me if you're not tied down.

tomwalz - I don't think i'm in a position to choose or approve as to which maker is suitable for the simple fact that it's a free gift. I believe Mike will choose the right maker for this job but thank you for the recommendation. Indeed Derek's work is impressive.

Tom Mayo...any word on this?

Heck yes, Tom Mayo, any word on this? Do your magic Tom, I can see it now, a vision in curly koa...

Jake

Plus he is half way to Eric from me anyway

Jake - LOL!

You DO want him to make the knife right? Let's not make the Hawaiian island's God of Talonite angry for thy might strike down with a single word.....NO!

Yes, certainly. Tom Mayo's work is very beautful.

1. My thought was that the design of the knife is a significant work of art in itself and should be executed the way the artist wished. We can design alloys, processes and equipment that some people execute beautifully and others do not.

2. Plus I am a big believer that a gift should be what the recipient wants.

3. I was afraid that it would be a problem to find an artist who was very good and had the time to make the design. Rob is two years out. I thought about Kit Carson because his Talonite dive knife is so beautiful. I know how far out he is because I have a folder on order.

I guess I see the decision as a combination of the artist influenced by how long you want to wait.

Tom, I like your style, thank you very much for your generous prize and your great attitude. You have set an example that will be hard for any other company to match, not so much in its value as in the spirit you've shown all of us... You are an outstanding member of the knife community.

Hi Tom! Thank you for your generious offer! It's a great contest and i'm very greatful for the opportunity to be able to participate. Since you've spoken and I have the final say as the recipient....
TOM MAYO it is! BUT i'm not sure if he will take on the job or is he free to do so.

Mike, will you be able to contact him and ask if he is able to accept the request?

Rob and Kit is very busy for the next 2 years or so, i guess TOM is the best candidate and I'm anxious to see the out come of the knife and i'm sure Jake Evans is too.

Thank you again for the wonderful gift!

I saw a thread awhile ago and found something that REALLY Pleases me! Sorry about this Cobalt but......YES! Lightfoot works with Talonite! YAhoooo! Hey Mike, Maybe Lightfoot will take on the job? Jake, any comments on this? Let me know folks!

Eric, great design, by the way. I also liked the runner up.

If you can get Lightfoot to do it, I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. But I think that would be the case with all the makers mentioned also.

HI Folks! Just came back from Singapore!

Thanks Mike for looking out! Allen Blade would be an excellent choice too cause i had a Pocket Hobbit which he did a Good job in re-finishing the blade.

Jake,

Your Camillus knife is ordered through A.G.
Russell. Allison at 800 255-9034

She set it up to send 2 knives here (yours and mine). If you like she can have yours shipped directly to you.

There is a wait because of the sheaths but they should be shipped pretty soon.

Don't know if I told you but I saw the knives at the Oregon show. It is a truly excellent job of taking the artists design into production. They are definitely works of art. Simonich was with me and he is very pleased at how well they captured the style and the feel.
