Is it pay taxes or buy more leather? I decided to try something I had on hand already plus it was free. :D

I had done some heat treating a few months back for a fellow local bladesmith, Alan Warren http://www.alanwarrenknives.com/ Alan had asked for away to pay me back that wouldn't involve money and the idea of him making a sheath came up. I'd just kind of let slip away until Alan called me yesterday and he mentioned doing a sheath for me again so I took him up on the offer. He said he didn't even mind doing one for a big blade so that's what he will get. Alan makes a much nicer sheaths than I do so I'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with. I'll be leaving in the morning for the Oregon Show and didn't want to take this big ole blade wrapped up in a blanky so I went with cardboard. I did use leather for the welt. Surprisingly it feels pretty sturdy.

how do you think it will handle rainy weather?
:D

here neither! Well, not today at least.
I thought Busse had a patent on cardboard sheaths.

HA!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
someone has a little time on their hands:p

I started reading your post, then glancing down at the pic, then reading some more.... and I thought... uh.. that's Cardboard.... ?? :D

And there are so many makers that just don't offer a Quality sheath with their knives. You should put up a YouTube video on this to help those guys out.

The duct tape wrap on the cardboard leather welt sheath is the bomb!what are you selling those for?

It's all in the presentation man. That's not a cardboard and duct tape sheath. It's a one off custom compressed fiber knife sheathing system with moisture repelling synthetic laminate. Put it on Ebay when you get it back, you'll make a killing. :thumbup:

Oh great, that short sword will be sold for sure now!!! No one could walk away from that sheathwork...

Hope it's a great show for you Ray!

I just finished packing for the show. I'd have been done much earlier if I hadn't got into the sheath making mode. If I do that again I'll be using the camo duct tape. That sheath out to get a few smiles if nothing else at the show. I'm beat.......

I carried my big bowie in a cardboard sheath (held with duct tape wrapping, but not completely covered) almost every day for probably 3 or 4 months. I wanted to try out carry ideas over a longer period to find the way that worked best, before I carved it in wood.

I was actually pretty surprised at how well that cardboard held up. :D Yes, I did carry it in the rain on several occasions. The duct tape repelled the water pretty good. The areas that weren't covered by tape got a little "fuzzy" looking on the surface, but didn't fall apart.

I'll bet it won first place at the ventilation appliance show:p
(in more ways than one, as I'll bet that knife could provide a little ventilation for any well sealed carcass:eek::D)
