And your Point Is?

Semi-spear point.

Fuller: I appreciate your reply, but don't you think its a bit harsh to say that "there is no purpose to the American tanto point on a knife other that looking "cool" so that it appeals to young people."?

Every knife has its purpose and job that it was designed for. Suppose that you DID need a knife capable of piercing body armor, or capable of cutting a way out of a tough situation. The tanto point is the most durable piercing point out there, and just because you personally have never happened upon a use for it does NOT mean that there is none.

And in regard to Cold Steel's ads, obviously those demonstrations were just that; demonstrations of the tanto points' piercing ability and a show of the durability and toughness of their blades. Do you know how many SUV's actually see any sort of "off-road conditions?" I don't have exact figures but its somewhere around only 1 in 10. Yet all the commercials show SUV's scaling mountains and all manner of foolish things that never would really be done. It's all marketing.

I like a nice drop point with a high shallow hollow grind. Maximum slicing goodness with a low point for detail work.

Its not my number one,but the tanto certinly came to the "rescue" a couple of times on the job.I almost always have a tanto with me at work,in emergency services you never know when or whats coming your way and the tanto has let me pry when my knife was all I had and I still had a tip on the blade after.

Weaker tipped knives have their place to be sure, just not when people are counting on me to help them.:)

I really don't have a favorite tip. It depends on the knife. On hunters I prefer drop points, on bowies and these new small tactical fixed blades give me a clip point every time. On slipjoints I like clip, spear, wharncliffe, sheep foot, coping, pen and spey blades. I also like the traditional Japanese tips and the slightly upswept clip point that you find on the classic Loveless style fighters.

About the only points/blade shapes I don't care for are tantos and spearpoints...I will take a flat ground blade over any other grind..always.

For a 3-3 1/2" folder...wharnie...that kind of knife gets used for alot of point work. Opening pkgs, cutting out mag articles, pizza, boxes etc.

Small FBs...drop point

Big FBs...very shallow clip point.

It works for me, YMMV!

drop point. its an all-rounder and perfect for utility chores! :D
