My Droid X has OS 2.2 which is the latest version here in the states. I don't know much about any ipad clones though running android. I think its an excellent OS though. I trust googles development and testing and I can't say enough good about my phone. Its basically a mini laptop. I suppose it would be virtually just as good in iPad size. I hate the term iphone killer because its been used so much for every new phone that comes out. I think android and google are definitely giving apple a run for their money. Its not just the next big thing.

I have an Android phone and I will take it any day over the iPhone. You definitely want 2.2 (FroYo). Part of the update is a new way of running software that makes the same hardware 2-5 times faster (yes, times, not percent) depending on the task. Another part is Flash support. However, FroYo apparently still has some problems running on larger screens (i.e., tablets - all previous versions have the same issues).

Actually the next version is supposed to come out really soon, I think. No one is sure if it's going to be 2.3 or 3.0 but we know it's called Gingerbread and it's supposed to better support tablets. Some people are saying as early as this week.

Also, there are some more legitimate Android tablets coming out now - take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab. It's pretty cool.

Thanks - I have to carry a BlackBerry for a work phone, so was looking at a tablet style machine, and came across the Android pad today. The price is way under the IPad, so that makes it a lot more attractive. I guess I need to check the Android OS version/level.

I was looking at the apps for the Adnroid, and there seems like a lot of choice, so it seems like it might be a good deal, depending on the battery life in these things.

iProducts are trash! I'll take my Evo, thanks. I've been working with Apple products for about 10 years now, my favorite thing about them is the sound they make when I take my 28oz California framer to them. :barf:

I usually get lost around computers etc, but I love my Droid X. I mean I really love it. It was a wonderful purchase and it turns into about anything you would ever need.

Heres a list of things you can do, or basically replace with one purchase.

laptop
8 meg hi def video
8 Megapixel Camera
GPS-------------------used this all the way to Illinois and back. Awesome!
calculator
flash light

THe camera saves me a ton of time cause its linked to my photobucket and it uploads directly too it. No more taking pics and then have to wait to upload and then link em . No. I take em and they are waiting on photbucket by the time I get inside.:)

bar code scanner--yeah its cool. I can take a pic of most any barcode and it will look it up and tell you where to get best price on it.

aIR HORN FOR GAMES....lol.

pLUS THE MARKETPLACE on it.....you can go and download about any program you could ever imagine.

I have an Iphone 4, it's really good for me. Yes, it has it's moments where it drops a call or so but it has been good for me for the most part. The thing about apple products is that it's been around for a while so there are lots of products out there that are compatible from apps for everything to adapters for other items to work together. For instance, come cars have the wire adapters so you can just plug your ipod to it to play your music...

I like iPhones, iTouches, and iPads, and Apple products in general. (well, not so much iTunes, but trust me - I'm no Apple hater.

I also carried a Crackberry for work for years and really loved it for what it was.

I now have a Droid-X, and I've never been happier with this sort of device. Frankly, it's the first time I've ever been truly impressed with a 'smart' device. I'll probably never go back.

One of the things to be aware of is that many of the clones coming out do not support the android market (where you get new applications). The new Samsung Galaxy Tab that is coming soon is the first one to do so...I think. The ipad does what it does well...but is expensive. I have been using an android phone for a while and really appreciate the flexibility of the android system. A quick bit of advice is to go to youtube and watch as many vids as you can that show people using and talking about their ipads and galaxy tabs.

Go without he iPad. much more support and aftermarket accessories. I have friends who are attorneys and physicians and they love their iPads. I love mine too.
A friend of mine who is a Apple fan boy like me decided to try the DroidX and then came back to iPad shortly after. All products have their hiccups just like the Droid products and Apple products.

Seriously, though, Android is designed as a phone OS, not a tablet OS - the key difference being screen size.

What's your point? Apple's iOS was also designed as a phone OS, not a tablet OS (in case anyone has forgotten, iOS was tablet-free for more than three years). They modified it to work on tablets. The same will be done for Android, probably in the next update that will be coming out very shortly.

I'd have to agree. My Nexus I seems more like a computer that does phone tricks and vice versa for the IPhone. At this stage of development of an android pad, I'd be more concerned with the hardware and screen specs than the OS.

Mr. Eslam98, the usefulness, thoughtfulness, and helpfulness of your contribution to this thread simply can not be measured.

I assure you that no reply at all could possibly have better advanced this discussion.

The level, number, and specificity of the details you provide certainly does distinguish you and your posts.

I think we're in violent agreement...

iOS had to be redesigned a bit to make it work well on the iPad, and I have no doubt that Google will do the same thing with Android in the relatively near future. But the OP's question was about current tablets, and Google itself has admitted that Android 2.2 is not designed for tablets.

I haven't seen any concrete information about the upcoming Android 2.3 being tablet-ready, so buying a tablet now based on that idea seems like a gamble.

I purchased a Blackberry Storm2 about two months ago. I figured most 'smartphones' were similar. Verizon didn't have the Droid off backorder and they assured me it was the same.

For the life of me, I simply hate this phone. Nothing other than email works well. The phone stinks, the interweb access is slow and clicking links is a 50% chance you will get it or enlarge the screen. It doesn't do anything well. For me....

So bad I RAN down to the Verizon store as soon as they unleashed the iPad with the MiFi option (a 3g WiFi card for anywhere you get a signal.)

All 500 of my contacts with addresses, and emails: Synced. Immediate FULL SCREEN access to the web: Done. Photo album to REALLY show details: Done.

At this point I couldn't be happier. I'm finished with a compromised mobile web and keyboard. I'm leapfroging right over that technology. I want an older cell phone that just clicks photos, works with a keypad, and qwerty texts. (LG ENV?)

I'm hardly an Apple snob, but each time I spent hours fixing my PC laptop problem I rethink how my Mac Tower Pro has been faultless for (3) years. I can't dispute the FACTS.

Another strong vote for the iPad.
