Angle grinder problem

So far, without even selling one knife, I've managed to break a small bone in my hand (and there's no wayyy I'll tell that story); get a steel sliver in my eye (and that one scared me to death, now I wear safety glasses just hand handing); and setting myself on fire. You guys should charge more, every knife has been dipped in blood.
Dave
Dude!!!! It sounds like you are a accident waiting to happen.
  You almost burnt your self yesterday???? I think the first thing you should make yourself is a suit of armor.

I teach metals shop at our HS. At the school everything has its guard in place and they are used. At home... well, I don't even know where the guards hand grinders are anymore. The other tools have their guards in place.

I hope to survive, IG. I think my wife has taken out a new life insurance policy on me. Ah, but it's all due to lack of the proper equipment, I'm sure when I get my shop up with bandsaws, power hammers, grinders, and so on I will be injury free; just like all you fella's.

Dave

You haven't lived until you chop yourself in the head with a 19" Bowie, Dave! :footinmou :D

Dave send the grinder to me and go back to the store and buy the one that has the disk glued in place,,,,, problem solved :D :D

Dan, that's to easy for him and he probably screw that up TOO.
:p :p :D

It seems like any of the knife making equipment you get is guardless, buffers and belt grinders. While we're on the subject of angle grinders, what do you guys use yours for? I have one and never seem to need it. Maybe I'm missing something.

I use mine for cleaning up forgings (grinding or wire brush), cutting stock, occasionally establishing bevels, that sort of thing. Grinding discs are much cheaper than belts...

Peter

Cleaning base metals for welding (beveling for MIG). Few shotty attempts at stock removal. Cutting straight lines in sheet steel(if snips won't get the job done right).

I guess that's about it.

I've had that hole problem thing once before. The disk sucked, the ring popped off and the hole got F'ed. Damn Craftsman! The DeWalt, and Ryobi ones are good.

I always use shield, always use face shield. Never set myself on fire.

You have my attention :D .... That is if there is a story about a bowie to the head  .

I can see I'm taking some flack here. IG must be feeling his oats and it's expected, but Dan, e tu? And yesterday I promised myself I would reform and be nice to you guys.

I want'ya to know I worked on knives all day yesterday and I have no injuries, not even a scratch.

Did you guys see the post a while back by the guy who cut a chunk off his big toe? Dropped his spearpoint bowie on it. Hahah! Ahhh, I mean, wasn't that too bad?

Beware the eyes (??) of March. If he would of listened he wouldn't have had to say that to Brutus (e tu).

Dave, I had a friend with your kind of luck, but he fell out of a ditch and got hit by a beer truck! Just kidding.
My Dewalt's nut would not hold down a cut-off disc tight enough for use. To much shoulder gap. I went into my junk box of washers and found one that would fill in the shoulder gap enough to allow the nut to tighten down against the disc collar and keep it locked in place. Problem solved simply and safely. Give it a try.

All joking aside what your describing is very dangerous, have someone expierenced with these grinders check it out. Could be the discs your buying don,t have the right size arbor hole..If there is a body shop close to you ask these guys they will be familiar with them.

Thanks for all the informaion. A lot to think about, and in the end I'll do what I should'a done, tale it to a DeWalt Service Center and bitch loudly.

Dave
