Angle measurement

So far I've only done flat grinds, so I just use a square to keep it 90 degrees to my work rest.

I use a welders magnetic square to square up the platen to the tool rest and lock it down. Other then that I just tilt the blade to get the angle I want and walk it up to a scribed line or use the bubble jig.

What seems to be very accurate is to use the Iphone App "Angle Meter". Just put the phone against the work rest to get a base reading. Should be approximately 90 degrees or zero depending upon the phones orientation. Then add to that the desired angle you want for the platen and use the phone up against the platen to set it. It really is a lot simpler then I make it sound.

Just fyi the iphone's digital gyroscope is not very accurate, I have one and was pretty disappointed. It's fine for games or a rough estimate but something you know is true 90 like a welders magnet or square is probably better. Still, it's fine for quick stuff but why wonder why youre bevels are off by a degree or two when you dont have to.

Okay, thanks I didn't know that. It seems accurate as I get very consistent readings.
It might just be that they aren't all created equal.. but when I got mine I tried a couple of those apps (iPhone 4 32G) and I found it less than reliable, but it might just be my phone. Though if one isn't perfect, maybe others aren't either.
