Stacy do you know what risks there are with borax fumes? I've heard its carcinogenic but that would mean that a different compound is formed since borax isn't known as a potential carcinogen. :confused:
 
Question would there ever be a time when you would mix borax with steel powder for like forge welding motorcycle chain or cable. And if so what would the mix of borax to steel powder be.

Its a feasable process. If one simply wants to add another type of forge weldable metal into the mix.
Be aware, despite being 'bathed in borax' alot of the powder metal or even fine shavings will be lost, oxidised & carried away with the flux.
Years past when a Smithy was in every neighborhood, alot of "magical forging flux" were mixtures of borax & metal shavings of some kind.

Btw, Chemistry of Borax has not changed since the way back beginnings of this thread...
