Anhydrous Lanolin

where are you guys getting this beeswax

I run across beekeepers from time to time. Most will part with a pound or two if you talk to them just right. ;)

Peter -- I don't think they have bees wax in it any more as it dosen't seem to get very stiff under cold conditions. The best thing we have noticed is the presents of an anti bacteria agent that keeps the beef tallow from getting rancid. Some of the batches I have mixed about 10 years ago are still like new. As to its use as a lead bullet lub with black powder one of my friends shot 70 shots in a row without wiping and came very close to winning a national match. Under cold conditions ( Minn. winters ) we put some lub right on top of the powder so that the fowling remains soft and we are able to load a second shot without cleaning with some non freezing solvent. This method also helps eliminate gas cutting in VERY cold weather which is due to the lead not expanding because of its hardness at those temperatures.
PS Don Stith says Hi

I think I'll mix up a batch for this weekend Pete. I have a new one I haven't sighted in yet and that seems like a good lube to try.
Off to Lowe's :D

HMMMM. Don Stith, Haven't seen him for ages. :p

FWIW,

Back before this knife thing got out of hand, I was casting bullets and doing a lot of shooting (not black powder). I swear by Felix lube: http://www.castpics.net/RandD/felix_lube/felix_lube.htm

The stuff is great. I shoot a 454 Casull. Bullets were traveling around 1500 FPS, no real leading to speak of. Gotta love the stuff.

Burch: any Arts and Crafts store will have it. about 10 - 12 bucks a pound out here in Nevada. They proably have the lanolin too but I haven't checked.

Peter,

small bore - yeah right ;)

I have a single action with ports to keep the muzzle from denting my forehead. However, I have permanent ringing in my ears, really bad - I'm listening to it right now and every day for the rest of my life it seems. I think those ports are partly responsible. I used hearing protection, but that is one loud gun.

Anyway as much fun as it is, I haven't shot it in a while. Besides, I'd have to warm up for a few weeks with something wimpy, like 44 mag. ;) ;)

Steve

The ports do increase the noise level to the shooter and everyone on the sides. They also help tame the recoil a lot so it becomes a matter of damned if you do or damned if you don't.

I'm like you....it takes a while to get back into the swing of it or I wind up flinching out 12" groups at 25 yards. :o

just use a shotgun you're almost guaranteed to hit something at 25 yards :D
boy i wish i spent more time at the range. hopefully i can get out for deer season this year

Just tie it to a fence post and tie 25 foot string to the trigger. problem solved! :D

Steve's got a bad case of magnumitis !! [ shooting anything bigger than a 44mag ]

Hi I don't know if this will help but I use it on stag and ivory to prevent drying and cracking. Lanolin is a major ingrediant. A coat once a year seems to work. It is called "bag balm". It is made by a small company up here in Canada and was developed to keep the bag and udders of dairy cattle soft and supple. Strangely enough a couple of years ago Shania Twain mentioned in an interview that she has used it for years as a skin cream. The damn women up here went nuts over it and bought up every can in the country. It took the company weeks of double shifts to put out an adequate supply for the farmers. Try a T.S.C. store if you have them in the States.(Tractor Supply Company).

In my area of central US,
most larger pet stores,
farm supply,
even WalMart I think (health aisle)
carry this & similar 'crossover' products.
Meant for animals,
but people use it.
