6 months ago I introduced a friend to knifemaking buy helping him build a dagger with a stacked leather handle and a blade and pommel from jantz.. Today he e-mails me looking for a source for animal head pommels ,lion, bear, bunny ?.?. I fear that he may be going off the deep end and down the slippery slope we all know and love.. Anyone know where he could find something like this ???
 
Has he given thought to sculpting his own in wax and investment casting them into whatever metal he wants?
 
Eric, something like that would work...Phyl I suggested lost wax casting to him, but I don't think that he is set up for it.
 
He Just needs to carve it up in wax. Make it a little bigger than he wants because there will be some shrinkage when the final piece is cast. Then find a local casting company and have it made. Bronze might be the cheapest way to go. If he has a mold made on it he can have multiples made, otherwise it will be a one-off.

I'm with Chuck. Don't know what's available in your area, but hiring out the casting shouldn't be too hard. I used to do it quite a bit in the LA area. And, as Chuck stated, once he has designs he likes, the casting house can make vulcanized rubber molds from which they can inject repeat wax copies for repeat metal castings.

If he's not into this, he might want to look into what wax models and/or metal castings might already be available. Jewelry ones would not probably be adequate, but maybe there are other industries or hobbies out there that would be? I'm thinking the fantasy gamers, scouts, miniaturists, wildlife enthusiasts, etc....

I see you're in CT. Are you going to be making it to IG's mini HI July 19th? It'd be GREAT to meet you!
