Help Please! I am making a bowie (1/8" thick sawblade steel) with an upswept flat grind blade and it has a pretty dramatic point. I have made a couple of test blades and feel that the HT and temper are about right (only a slight wave when cutting a nail in half and breaks at about 45 degrees). I can heat treat and temper it with no problems, but it is still too brittle and breaks easily. How can I anneal this area without ruining the HT and temper?

Brittle tips are often caused by overheating the tip during hardening producing large grains which are brittle .You can also do the same when final grinding the tip !!!

Actually, annealing does pretty much ruin the existing heat treat and temper. That's what annealing does. Personally, I would try to find some other solution (or the real cause to the problem, as mete mentioned) rather than making the tip soft as brass.
