Annealing Question

I recently picked up a big bag of vermiculite for annealing purposes. I only anneal 1 or 2 Pcs of steel at a time. Can I do this in a a 5 gallon plastic bucket if I keep the hot metal
away from the sides of the bucket? Wasn't sure how much heat radiated from the steel and through the vermiculite? Thanks, Don
 
Very little heat is conducted through vermiculite. You can go even smaller with your container... unless you are batching knives, of course.

Don... make sure to read up on the three steel types. Some steels(hyper-eutectoid) can become problematic with a slow cool anneal.
