Any one know how to anneal s5 steel? The same stuff thats in jack hammer bits. I believe the stuff is air hardend and once annealed what is the steps for proper forging, hardning and tempering?

from my Heat Treater's Gude-

forging - start at 1850 to 2050F, do not forge below 1600F

do not normalize

annealing - heat to 1425-1475, 1 hr for light sections up tp 4 hours for large. cool at a rate not to exceed 25 degrees per hr. Rate not critical after 950F.

stress relieve optional, 1200-1245 hold 1 hr per inch of cross section (1 hr minimum), air cool

hardening - preheat 1400, austenize at 1600-1695, hold 5-20 min., oil quench, as quenched 58-61Rc.

stabilize optional 300-320, -150 to -320 cryo

temper within 30 min if quenched from 1600, 15 min if quenched from 1695, temp 345-795, hardness 60-50Rc

recommended sequence
rough machine
stress relieve (optional)
finish machine
preheat
austenize
quench
stabilize (optional)
temper
final grind to size
