This May I will be celebrating the end of my 5th year as a full time knifemaker, so as is my custom, I will be holding my Design The Anniversary Knife Contest. The contest will begin now, and end on April 30th, so you have some time before then to think of a design.

There will be some rules this year, which must be followed. Please read them!.

1) You must be a JK Knives customer, past or current, to enter. (I get real tired of people, who never post here otherwise, to pop in, make an entry, then leave.)
2) The design must fit these parameters: no more than 12" overall, and no more than 1 1/2" tall, and 1/8" thick. (if you want it thicker, you will have to pay the difference)
3) The winner will get his knife made for free, in any standard handle material, but no sheath.
4) I have heard rumors of having "Team Designs", that`s fine, but each person will not get a free knife, they will each get $50 off the price of the knife.
5) I reserve the right to say no to any design (never had to yet, but you never know.)
6) One entry per person
7) You must post a full size picture, no thumbnail pictures.
8) The winner must send me a full size cardboard cutout.
9) I must be sent an email with permission to reproduce the design. (I had one guy in the past request $15 per knife if I sold any. Needless to say, I told him where to go)

I will let the contest run untill April 30th, then shut it down for voting.

Alright guys, here's my entry for this year! I liked my overall concept from last year, so I decided to revisit my design and make some fundamental changes. First, I made the handle more ergonomic. I also made the lines of the knife flow a bit better. I also gave the blade more belly and raised the tip to aid in any applications where stabbing may be necessary. This also put it more in the centerline of the knife from a balance standpoint. Named it the "Kifaru" as it means "rhino" in Swahili. Figured it was appropriate for this knife! Hope you guys like it, can't wait to see all the submissions this year!

I haven't been around here long but if it is ok, I would like to enter. I don't own a JK knife but I do have two on order that I'm chomping at the bit to get.

Here is the design I drew up. Basically, I would want this to be a heavy duty, no frills, wood cutting, food slicing, bear fighting, life defending knife. Nothing too fancy, just a hard working, get it done blade that could handle anything.

I think I'll call this the "Mountain Pal".

11" OAL
6" drop point blade
3/16" thick (I would gladly pay the extra)
1 1/2" tall blade
Thumb serrations
5" handle
Tiger Maple scales
Brass Pins
Exposed pommel/tang with lanyard hole

Thanks for the chance.

Here is mine, John. It is Aldos 1095 1/8" I love this design and would like to see what you can do with one like this. We can call it the JK Polander.
It is 7 inches oal with @2 1/8" scandi edge. I would like red canvas micarta with corbys for the scales. Thanks for the chance.

My entry -

The JK XD-A (Xtreme Duty - Anorexic) (bottom in this picture)
DSC_0902.JPG

pattern_final.jpg

Dimensions -
1/8" thick 01 steel
5 1/4" blade (tip to rounded front part of scale)
4 1/16" handle
1 1/2" high at highest point of thumb ramp
9 5/16 overall length

Special features -
full flat grind
Rounded spine with numerous shallow jimpings in thumb ramp area (also rounded)
Extra thick liners with polished black micarta scales
Scales rounded to give a round profile with no sharp edges
Hollow flared rivets

If I win, I will have John make the XD-A as above, and also make the larger knife above in 1/4" steel, with an overall length of 12.5 inches, with the same features. That knife is the JK XD-T

Reminds me a little of the huron EDC from JDs1. Some great looking ideas already :)

This is the SDCM, or Scott D. Cunningham Memorial.

Handle: 4.5" Black Micarta, with 1/4" hollow pins
Blade: 7.0"
Height: 1.5"
Thickness: 1/4"

The thumb ramp will have jimping, but I couldn't get it drawn even enough to my liking; and I had no idea where the best places were to put the holes for the handle and lanyard, so that is left up to the expert :-)
The upper edge of the blade will be swedged in an arc, but the upper will not come to an edge; it will still be dull and flat when looking at it from the top, and the bottom arc will overlap a third of the grind from the tip. I am unsure of the proper terminology to describe what I'm talking of, so I will draw a top view and tip view to show what I mean and post it later.

Some really nice designs already! Looks like this will be a good year.

Here's mine, I call it The Morrighan after the Irish goddess of battle. It was designed as a defensive knife that could be comfortably carried, really not intended for general utility or fieldcraft.

A bit on her inspiration....

"Mórrígan, the Great Queen (aka Morrígu, Morríghan, Mor-Ríoghain) is a figure from Irish mythology who appears to have once been a goddess of destruction and fury, a true warrior spirit. She used her power to manipulate and inspire fear in her enemies, and reveled in her lust for blood. She was also a prophet and a shapeshifter, sometimes associated with ravens or other flesh-eating birds of prey. Her worship accelerates at Samhain, the festival of death and the descent into the dark half of the year.

Usually seen as a terrifying figure, She is associated with war and death on the battlefield, sometime appearing in the form of a carrion crow"

The upswept sharpened spine was inspired by the curve on some persian style fighters and the elongated tanto-like point would pierce easily. There is also a bit of belly to aid in slicing which would also be enhanced by the yokote or secondary point.

That's my story at least. I just felt like trying to draw up something a little different this year.

Ok. Since, i decided not to enter a puukko, this has been the other one that has been gnawing at my brain. It is styled after a Schrade Sharpfinger, though i did not look at one when designing this.

I happened to pull out my muzzleloader to assist with the pic. and, since there is an old-timey feel to this knife, i am going to call it the JK Flintlock (if it gets made...your call ;) ).

When i design, i actually start right on a piece of poster board and modify by look and feel. this one turned out to be 9" overall with a 4.5" blade and handle. I would ask for it to be made in 1/16" O-1 with a full flat grind.

these are really crappy pics. i hope to add better ones during the day time. Hope y'all like it...cuz i sure do, and i would love to have John make me one. :D

Geez, tough crowd this year. A couple of you are stealing designs from my head, please continue doing that.:D

I need to get a better pic of it but for now, this will have to do. Blade is 4 5/8, handle is 4 5/8. Height is 1 1/2".

Okay, think I'm going with something like this, have to clean it up a little, make a cutout soon probably but I've got a few things on the desk right now so thought I'd post it now before i forget.

if it helps it's drawn with a pen recommended by outdoorsfan, on a book about Monty Pyton

I call it the RiverRiffle
100_6621_zps501862ec.jpg

working cutout

It's a Jk take on a rifleman's knife. I'm calling it the River-Rifle because I had to ask JDS1's permission to keep going, after getting hold of the Riverwoods companion he designed all my handle designs are looking...familiar :).

As I understand it this would actually be a smaller Riflemans knife...but this is as big as my A4 sized paper will allow anyway. Dimensions:

Overall: 12"
handle: 4 3/4"
Blade: 7 1/4"
Overall Height: 1 1/2" at it's tallest point (from the butt to the line of the blade)

If I were to order it:

Scales: Zircote or Amboyna ...or maybe walnut ;)
Pins: one brass, one mosaic, brass landyard tube,
Special features: rounded spine

FYI my son also wants to join in, I think he has me beat:

Can a 6 year old enter, I have a JK for him when he gets old enough so he's kind of a customer? :)

I`ll have to keep that pattern out of my wife`s hands or else she will want one.

No design will be disqualified, unless it`s something I really can`t do, and so far I only see one "iffy" design. The only thing is that if they don`t fit in the parameters in the rules, I will need to charge a little something extra to make them.

No more than 12" overall, and no more than 1 1/2" tall, and 1/8" thick.
