Since learning that a Gurkha House Forum was to become a reality, Craig and I have been bouncing ideas off of each other on ways to make it a great place to visit, relax and learn. We also want to keep it interesting and are open to new ideas and suggestions.

One thing we believe is that a picture is worth a thousand words (actually 2500 if you allow for inflation, taxes and cost of living increases). The folks who own, operate and care for the BladeForums are concerned (and rightfully so) with the use of too many photos because of the excessive bandwidth they consume. So, in order to encourage the forumites to show their stuff without bogging down the system we've started a Photo Gallery to display your pics.

With permission from Craig and maddog 2020 I've posted a few pics to get the album up and running. Have a look, you'll get an idea of where I'm going with this: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=104694&a=890558

Here's how it works:

  • E-mail your photo(s) to me at blackdog@snakebite.com in .jpg format if possible. Other formats (.gif .tiff .bmp etc) are usable but I'll have to attempt to convert them to .jpg format.

Give a brief description of the photo in your e-mail message and advise whether you want your screen name or real name to appear on the photo caption.

If your photo is on a web site, e-mail me with the url and a description of the photo. don't forget to mention which name you want on the caption. Note: photos located on a web site can be no larger than 30kb due to the download method required.

Now for the rules:

  • All photos are used by permission only and will be removed from the album at your request.

The original photographer retains the copyrights to his photos.

No pornographic, racist or otherwise offensive photos will be posted.

The anonymity of the forumites will be respected at all times. If a members real name or e-mail address is not in his member profile, DON'T ASK ME FOR IT.

Craig & I make the final decision to post or not post a certain photo.

As a final note, I put together an album of the various khukuri models that are available from Gurkha House, a sort of "sneak preview". http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=104694&a=896858

For detailed descriptions and prices etc, visit Craig's web-site at www.cystern.com/khukuri/

Ladies and Gentlemen the Gallery is open. Send me some stuff to put in there. BTW, we'd like the photos to be somewhat knife related, but it's not really necessary.

Great idea Blackdog.

Craig,
I cold blued my M-J, now it looks like the one in the picture. It didn't come out as good as the hot bluing that you are going to use on the WWIII, but it still looks pretty good. I think i'll try to get it bead blasted, then re-blued so it will be non-refective.
The WWIII will be one good looking knife with the polished blue blade and the black micarta handle. I can't wait until they are finished.

You did a great job, Blackdog. The photo gallery will be a nice addition to the forum. Thanks for your effort.

Steven F & p1445

Thanks guys. Your comments are most appreciated. Any suggestions for the gallery will also be welcome. The Gallery is meant for all of us to enjoy and participate in.

Craig is right p1445, let's see that blade. You got our imaginations spooling up now. Send me some pics of your M-J to post on the Gallery. If you get some shots of the different results as you experiment, we can track it as a work in progress. That's what I plan on doing with the WW III as the different stages (blade, finish, handle, sheath) are completed.

Note: If you don't have a scanner or digital camera (which I don't), most of the photo processing places will put your photos on a floppy disc or CD if you ask them.

Blackdog, and Craig,

Guess what I have drying in my basement?! Naw...it isn't vension jerky (though I wouldn't mind some...lol). I put a handle on that SN1 I got from Craig about 2 months ago.
I wanted to go the leather handle route, but I decided to avoid it
frown.gif
for now (next time).

I had made a curvy/goofy looking cherry wood handle a while back, but never attached it. I FINALLY attached the handle to the SN1!
smile.gif
. It has a layer of tongue oil on it now, and it has to sit until tomorrow nite before I can steel wool it down and apply another coat....and so on. I want at least 3, or 4 coats on there, so I should have some pics by the end of the week.

This shape you are going to see is NOT a STD khukuri handle by any means...LOL. Everyone can LOL at it pretty soon.

Ray,

Can't wait to get those pics up on the gallery. If it's even half as nice as the cherry handle you put on the WWII model, it'll be beautiful. I was hoping your next effort would have been a leather handle (mmmmmm, LEATHER), but I know that's going to be a very time consuming and work intensive project. I'm sure it will be well worth the wait once it happens.

Blackdog,

Come up with another handless Khukuri, and I WILL put a leather handle on it, using the washers you were kind enough to mail me -
smile.gif
. Someone want to volunteer a subject? Craig - you have any around?

Good winter project!

Y'know, since the tangs on the khuks are annealed soft, you could round off the end a bit and use a die to thread it. That way a nut could be screwed on behind a buttplate. This would give you the pressure you need to keep the washers together.
Well, at least in theory.

Ray: Bad news: I do have one handle-less khukuri left. It's a WW.

Also, I echo blackdog when I say that I can't wait to see the Mad Dog Special Number Two.

Craig and Blackdog,

DAMN!

LMAO!

I had committed myself on THIS one. Tang on the end can't be more than 1/8". Looks like I will have to weld, or build up the handle to accept the leather washer BD sent me. Only way the leather washers will work is under compression, so you will see a nut on the back. Ideally, I would like to use a 1/4 x 20 nut on the end to be safe. We have lots of aluminum around for a front and rear cap.

Craig - send me that other handless WW when you get a chance (no hurry). I doubt I will be able to do anything with it this year. Too much other stuff going on at the moment
frown.gif
.

If you had a lose handled Panawal (that would be MUCH easier to convert!) -- hint, hint
smile.gif
.

Ray 'md2020'

Well, I DO have a certain Panawal that has a rather infamous history, but I don't think you'd want it
smile.gif

I think you'd be fine with the WW. I'll get if off to you in the next week.

Craig.

Craig,

Ummmmmmmmmmm - what is the infamous history behind THIS Panawal you are refering to? If I had a Panawal, I could machine/grind the flat to the correct width for the washers and the end of the tang would more than enough material. This is an inside joke I assume?? LOL.

I am game - send me whatever
smile.gif
. Insert foot DEEPER into mouth
frown.gif
....LOL.

MadDog: I'm surprised - I thought you'd remember this one. But I see that Blackdog is enlightening you

Craig,

I recognized it after I saw the names....LOL. Would you care to part with this particular Panawal since it is 'cursed'?! It would be a shame to dismantle a whole usable knife to practice on. Blackdog has one that falls in the category of the handle needing some attention
smile.gif
.

Some one come out with a Panawal that needs a new handle put on it - no guarantees on how it wil look afterwards: remember I am into function not asthetics
smile.gif
.

The SN1 has another coat coming....pics to follow soon.

Ray 'md2020'

If Blackdog is offering his Panawal for a makeover (they are his washers, after all), go ahead on his - the one I was going to send has a cross-cut edge that wouldn't make for a very good knife (it's big and heavy, though). But wait a minute: You may have trouble with the tang on a Panawal if you were going to do leather washers. Wasn't that your intention?

Craig,

The tang on the Panawal can get machined down to whatever width I need. We have manual milling machines and cnc machines where I work.
smile.gif
Worse case, I take it to the grinder and belt sander at home....LOL. It is always easier to remove material rather than add material.

A crosscut edge with a leather handle would look kind of ungly IMHO....LOL.
smile.gif

Blackdog,

How about I do up your Panawal with the leather washers you sent me, and you can get the khukuri back when I am done?
smile.gif
Good chance at a nice handle for no $ on your end except mailing it to me. Let me know, I like to tinker with stuff.

Maddog,

That's an offer I can't refuse. It would be forever known as the Dog House Special and would sit in a place of honor in my collection. Thanks so much.

A little background on the Panawal. After the last hurricane I had 2 trees down in my yard. My neighbors also had a few trees that didn't make it through the storm. The Panawal was called into service. It chopped everything that needed chopping and was then used to cut and remove sections of sod that had been torn up in the storm. All of this had ZERO effect on the blade or edge. It's built like a tank.

As I chopped, I started experimenting with the handle. If I discovered a "hot spot" I would grind or sand a little from the handle. Then I started wondering how it would feel if the handle was a bit more flat. So, a little more came off here and there. I'm afraid I got a little too enthusiastic in my artistic endeavors. I took off just a little too much of the handle rivit heads and the scales worked loose.

The Panawal started off perfect and the handle fiasco was my own fault, nothing to do with the Kamis workmanship. In my quest to make it better, I screwed it up. One shouldn't mess with perfection
