Announcing the NEW 15080BK-191 Gold Class Crooked River!

This is clearly sold as a collectible, so I wonder if these gold class knives ever actually end up increasing in value?

So if I'm seeing that price correctly, I can have one Benchmade and all of the possible QC headaches that it may come with it, OR

2.3 Damascus Sebenza's
OR
3.33 Sebenza 31's
OR
2.85 carbon fiber Sebenza's
OR
2 Shirogorov's

...all pretty much guaranteed to be flawless from the factory.

Can someone please tell me where the value (if any) is in this knife? Very few Gold Class Benchmade knives avoid depreciation, and the ones that hold or gain value do so because they are one-offs like the 7505-132. This CR could almost be made in the custom builder for 1/3 of the price with the exact same blade, and nearly the same CF handle...

value is in the eye of the beholder! I can carry an el cheapo production folder like most of the world or carry something like this and if money is of no concern its not a big deal. I can't exactly get jeweled liners, ti hardware, damasteel bolsters and unidirectional cf out of the customizer and honestly close enough won't cut it for someone who wants this exact knife.

Unless you count the many custom knife makers out there that use all of those same materials for half the price, 3x the build quality, and none of the depreciation. Not to mention the aftermarket companies that build custom components for Benchmade knives, that also cost significantly less and feature better fit and finish.

But I guess if you want that exact knife shipped from the factory, you're right... that's the price.

I can't wait for the big reviewers to get ahold of this knife. Just like when they reviewed the insanely-expensive cigar cutter and found out that it sucks at cutting cigars.

Different strokes for different folks and after all its only money.

I was not aware of cigar cutter reviews.

LMAO...it's a guillotine cutter that doesn't cut against anything:eek:! Was it designed by someone who has never cut a cigar:rolleyes:?

it doesn't cut anything but it still seems to cut....funny how that works.
Mostly, and only some of the time if you check out the review...which is kind of a problem if you're clipping a $50 cigar with your $1000 cutter:rolleyes:

I just handled one of these at a local brick and mortar. The action was nothing special, and needed significant effort to get the blade the flick open. It failed to open twice before I realized how much effort it took, and that’s odd considering how heavy the blade is. Closing was much the same...the blade would not drop shut unless I shook it around a LOT.

The DLC coating on the blade looks pretty darn cool, and holds/shows fingerprints like you wouldn’t believe.

The pattern work on the liners looked...chintzy.

The carbon fiber handles didn’t even look like carbon, and if I didn’t know what they were, I’d assume it was smooth G10.

Granted, this is not my kind of knife. BUT, if I wondered this knife sight-unseen and it arrived in the condition this one was, I’d immediately ask for my money back.

How can the quality still be off on such an expensive knife? Is Benchmade doing anything at all to address these issues?

The handles are unidirectional carbon fiber, not G10. The jeweled and "cracked ice" finish on the inside/outside of the liners and clip is all hand finished.

Yep. Doesn't look like CF though, and that's what I was getting at. It's unremarkable. The cracked ice finish may do well at attracting fish, but all it did for me was raise one of my eyebrows in disapproval.

It's a forgettable knife with a crumby action, and to say that this Gold Class is worth what you're asking is asinine. Every custom knife manufacturer is running circles around your Gold Class knives for half the price (or less).

I've seen two of them at different ADs and the action on both was spectacular. Buttery drop shut.

was this one handled a ton and now it's dusty and dirty or maybe the pivot is a bit tight? that could explain the action and coated blades don't always open nicely unless broken in. I have owned a few gold class knives and have even carried them as edc's and ive never handled one that wasn't spot on.

As far as i could tell, it wasn't handled much (locked glass case). That being said, Axis knives tend to get smoother with use...not that anyone would ever use this knife for cutting tasks.

The knife in question...Note the voids in the carbon fiber and uneven edge bevel:
