good plan~!!!! obey the ndoghouse!!!-- I volunteer to convert to mormonism and marry all the kamis and their families and then they can all be citizens of our theocratic empire in utah ( or wherever we manage to make our new state)

Haha, you guys are crazy, in a good way. :D

I love HI and best wishes for Auntie, Pala and the rest of HI to get through this. I do not mind one bit if the prices rise, IMO the prices could be almost double of what they are now, and still be worth every cent!

agreed ogriso, for traditional hand crafted blades from some of the finest traditional makers in the world-- perhaps the only one with a continuous line of tradition into modern times with the near constant use and need for the work tools in the nepali fields and forests, can you name any other society with such a tradition of smithing?( probably lots but i cant)--lets not even mention the fact they are probably the only modern society that regularly supplies and trains with long blades ?( gurkhas i mean, i may be rambling)

basic point is -- we have something special here guys, lets support auntie and HI so they can continue to provide what we love so much. buy in stock items! donate when you buy a blem!

The caste system is a bit difficult for most of us to understand. I imagine what HI is facing is something like what I would face if I tried to establish a house of ill repute here in the US. Imagine if one was started and the working ladies started to do well, maybe even better than the neighbors.

Every once on a while people ask about knife carry laws in Nepal. Nepal law recognizes caste, and has differing laws per caste. Kamis have less legal freedom to carry a knife than a herititary member of the warrior caste does.

HI in it's good work faces challenges from social mores, taboos, and perhaps even the legal system itself. Mahatma Gandhi recognized the caste system as a major problem. It is thousands of years old though, and may be with us for a while.

These headaches are part, perhaps the major part, of the good work of HI.

good points howard, well informed thoughts.--- the caste system is pretty vile, but your point is well made, thats how they see them, judged on a perception of soul used to separate and weaken. ( dividing castes so that the upper crust remains upper crust?) I am not sure if we could explain the ontological understanding of soul and the context of caste here , but its a good discussion to have somewhere.

I hope all the untouchables become filthy rich and buy all the brahmin lands ! ( is that wrong or right?) either way my love and respect is off the scale for HI and its workers.

As much smoke and prayers as I can muster will be up and ongoing. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. There are a lot of really good guys and gals here ready and eager to help.

Thank you all for your supports and patience

It sounds like y'all could use the help of some honorable Gorkhas who are willing to stand up to your shops' neighbors on behalf of the kamis.

Believe me, the kami's could stand up for themselves if need be. But the last thing we need is fighting or bad press.
What we do need is a location away from outside influences, neighborly, political or otherwise that doesn't pose a logistical nightmare to get the product shipped to Auntie. Keeping this business going is nightmare enough without these extra burdens of grief.
Auntie doesnt talk much about it on the forum for good reason, but I can tell you.. that if you all knew just how much effort Auntie and Pala put into just getting a proper product made and getting it shipped here and what Auntie goes thru with some cranky customers... you would be surprised that these things are a inexpensive as they are. I know a bit of it, not all and I can tell you if I had to put up with the stuff she does sometimes, i'd be charging 2-3 times more for this product than she does.

yeah thats why I want us to all work really hard to understand what it takes, humble ourselves and offer extra money when we buy one of these wonderful knives, if we want her to be able to handle the stress alone, not to mention the logistics--- definitely need to find a more isolated area in nepal where people can't complain loudly ,

regardless we will stick with HI and be understanding, I dont care if you guys only make sweaters and tigers eye beads , customer for life.
