OK folks heres how you take a low budget vacation on the Texas Gulf coast. Bring enough food for the grandkids to be happy, about fifty gallons of fresh water, and as much block ice as you can pack in every orifice of the truck. I catch our own food and bait for the most part but we do bring a sack of taters, onions, garlic, p'nut oil and cornmeal. Nothing better than fresh fried seafood! We usually stay two weeks minimum and sometimes about a month. We get to know the local law enforcement and game wardens pretty well by the end of the vacation. It actually cost less for us to go on vacation than it does to stay home in the air condition. These pics are from a few years ago but it was my last vacation since my property and the old truck burned down. Sure miss it! Crappy cell phone pics but thats all I had at the time.
Here is typical camp setup. I use a parachute for the living room and kitchen and sleep in the back of the truck.
The kitchen setup. I made a custom crawfish burner and lantern tree for propane cooking but also cook on an open fire. In the winter i build the fire under the parachute and it stays pretty warm. If you pull the leaward side of the chute to the ground it cuts off the airflow through the camp but in hot weather you want airflow so I pull it up about a foot or so.
Surfboards tuck away in the roof of the truck and theres my wifes favorite spot!
A washed up coconut and roll of duct tape and they are happy as a clam!
Helping Mernie with the dishes.
Catch of the day! I speared this stingray and had its head pinned to the sand and still alive. I couldnt let it up and it was swimming around in circles and only had one spear so i had to get my wife to litteraly throw me another out in the surf to finish it off. We finally managed to get the job done and made a good dinner for several days. Makes good shark bait too. I caught two black tip sharks on it as well.
Fryed stingray and taters! mmmmmm!
Didnt have much to eat that morning.
Dogs enjoyed it.
A bit of windsurfing when the winds kicked up in the eve.
This is always a welcome time of the day during any Texas summer on the beach! Makes it all worth it! This is when the crabs get active and the fishing gets good!
Warming by the fire after a nite of stingray hunting. I use an underwater flashlight and a spear. You can usually see their tail sticking out of the sand and sometimes their eyes but they are masters of disguise and you have to be super careful. Well that was my last vacation and its about time for another!
