I'm assuming they are galvanized steel, which unfortunately will not work. Titanium and aluminum are the only materials I know of that can be anodized.
That washer game is fun, a firend of mine had one awhile back. Its hard to find a readily available paint that wont chip in those conditions. I would suggest spraying super light coats of paint with adequate drying time in between coats. A hair dryer or heat gun helps too. It may take up to 5 or more coats, but is better than one wet coat. Then a few coats of clear will help bury the color. Are the tops of the boxes covered in carpet or astro-turf? Good luck with it.
