Anodize Ti, bath method

What bath gives the best results?

Acidic water baths.

1. oregon stated several times that he couldn't see the color change in the bath. How long do you leave the Ti in the bath to get the colors?

30 seconds to 1 minute.

2. How would you get different colors on the same piece? Example some of the "FIZZ" patterns I've seen on some Matt Cacchiara modified knives with the different colors.

Ask Matt. Experiment. "Paint" with the electrode and different voltages.

3. Where can one obtain some Titanium wire and thin Ti cathode material? What happens when you use SS? What other metals can be used as cathodes?

I simply used the aligator clips and they worked quite well for me. I have a baggy of scrap Ti rods given to me by an engineer (leftovers after a project).

Sorry for so many questions but I think I might want to give this anodizing thing a shot.

Lots of fun. Be safe working with electricity.

I tried the water and baking soda method on a piece of titanium a friend of mine found for me with good results. I got everything from a golden brown through blue, purple, and very light baby blue around 40 volts (which was as high as my power supply went). I think the colors would have been a bit more brilliant if I'd been able to get the piece cleaner, but I did what I could, and it looks pretty cool as is.

Does anybody know of a place where I might be able to pick up cheap titanium rings in bulk (if there is such a thing?) I was thinking those might be fun to practice on and give out to friends and such if they could be had for under $10 each or so. I'm a little reluctant to buy them off some place like ebay as I have no idea if what's being sold there as titanium actually is.

Much safer to use a plastic tub as the bath,if you want different shades, power off connect both leads as normal hold the + lead switch on power and lift the job out of the liquid slowly that way you have parts of the job that get longer exposure = different colours.

P.S. Crank up the voltage

RE: My search for cheap ti continues. In the mean time I could ano the S-2's clip until it dissolves!

Use the clip as a anode, keep the Aligator clip clear of the liquid.

Has anyone tried using a variac in series with say a 75 watt light bulb and a full wave bridge rectifier on the output of the variac with a voltmeter to measure voltage?

I have done this on my liners on a Emerson cqc10
I used coke classic. I screwed up and left them in for to long it attacked the detent ball and started to pit the liner, another lesson learned. I used a DC model train power pack I did end with a good purple color, it was putting out about 30vdc.
