Do you also find it annoying to find someone you want to correspond with on a private basis only to find out his profile consists of his nickname alone?

Also - when deciding weather to share private information and / or sell/buy from someone - it is always better to know that someone is willing to give away a few details like his whereabouts, email, occupation, hobbies, etc.

Wadaya think?

I'm kind of hesitant to reply to a lawyer, but as an Israeli you can't be all bad.

Seriously, though, I don't want people to think that my occupation is part of who I am. I don't yet consider my job a career, and that's why I don't have it listed. Do you do a lot of trading/buying with us here in the States? If needed I could come up with a few references of past trades to ease the mind of whoever I was dealing with. Anyway, now that the chat room is up and running (I think) it should be much easier to interact and get to know the rest of us.
Happy Hunting.

Speaking for myself, I like to retain a little anonymity since I am generally posting before the whole world and I am in the computer business which makes me a little paranoid. However, I often strike up an online "friendship" with another maker and will correspond privately. In those cases I give out my personal information and trust them to keep it confidential. If I am involved in a trade or a sale then I automatically give out my personal information and invite the buyer/trader to call me at home to verify my personal information, hopefully giving them a sense of comfort and trust with our relationship.

If we are doing a trade, I'll tell ya my name. If you email and ask, I'll tell ya. I try not to post my name anywhere on the web. It's not that I don't trust bladeforums.com, its that I do not trust anybody.

If you really need to know, email and ask.

Hey guys - I'm a paranoid maniac as the next guy, but If you think not giving away your hobbies / fields of interest is going to save you from Mr. big brother, Are you in for a surprise..

To the computer geeks among us - anytime you link to the web (not from an Internet cafe) you are exposed. This is a simple fact of life and the state of technology.

For further details don't hesitate to email me directly...

I just think that among friends - and this is how I see this forum - it’s more polite to give your name, whereabouts, and interests.

It also helps evaluating your posts - cause if a city slicker would say something about surviving in the wilderness it usually wouldn’t carry as much weight as someone living in the outback, Australia..

But that's just me.

As an aspiring poet, I WANT to have my name in print. And yes, I like to play the bagpipes. Kind of hard to keep THAT a secret.

I'm more likely to post a helpful reply to an entity who seems like a human being, just as I'm more likely to yield the right of way to a driver I can see than to a person behind darkly tinted glass.

I am Stryver. And if you've met me anywhere else on-line, you would know me as Stryver. Outside of this electronic interchange, I go by a different name. I don't consider it an 'alternate personality' or anything like that, it's not some kind of fantasy life I lead (Though a fantasy life filled with sharp things could be nice...

). I just go by Stryver in these parts. If you meet me in flesh and blood, or we do some kind of real exchange, I will use the name you'd find in the phonebook, but as far as electronic data goes, I will continue to be Stryver.

SHHHH!!!

They're coming!!!

They have cameras and microphones, wire-taps and super-sensitive-computer-key-latent-fingerprinting-techiniques!!!

Most monitors are TWO-WAY!!! You look at pictures and words, but THEY look back at you!!! Yeah, you, cutting the toilet paper while sitting on your ceramic throne, and you, mister I like to type naked, and you, pinky up the nose... THEY see everyone!!!

No encryption is good enough...

Save yourselves...

BTW - the mere fact I am a paranoid does NOT as of itself mean I am not being chased by someone...

I use my nickname too! Mark W. Douglas.

I also use my real given name: Mark W. Douglas

I feel it is somewhat important to share at least some details about yourself, it gives you some type of credibility if you want some. But, to each their own and for whatever reasons one wishes to share things about theirself or not, it's up to them and they shouldn't be thought of any less either. Just my thought!

That's it! Buy into the scam!

Well, if you all have nothing to hide, no little secrets, no embarrassing moments, go ahead...

[damn, my mask just slipped, quick, gotta pull it up.... arg!]

OK, where was I? Oh yeah, keep on keepin' on... after all, if you don't mind being watched, listened to, monitored...

You hear that click? There it is again...

Gotta go...

What makes you think all the names posted are the poster's real names? Someone could post a false name (or tel. no. or address, etc.) to give people a false sense of security as easy as making up a nickname.

I've been criticized in the past for my anonymity. Folks like Mike Turber and Bram Frank can testify that I am in fact a real life person... for better or worse.

However, I don't include any public information because I never saw the need to. Ultimately, I don't think it's that big of a deal. But there are two reasons why I don't.

First, I am a shy and quiet by nature. I'm not the kind of person that is inclined to volunteer information about myself. But if people care enough to ask, I would be more than happy to answer any questions people may have about me.

Also, it's a matter of perception over the nature of the mediums. I treat the forums more along the lines of public speaking, and therefore, would like to stick "more to the topic" so to speak. However, email is more like a private conversation, lounging and casually talking amongst ourselves.

In other words, if you have questions about me, feel free to email me.

To me, displaying personal information does not necessarily mean that that person is more (or less) credible. As far as I am concerned, anybody can display their name, location, and hobbies-- which may or may not be fictitious- and still not be somebody I would want to know or have something to hide. If anything, I think it is far more useful to see how they handle themselves over the forums and decide from there.

But, that's just me.

SB - if you think emails are private - think again.

It is notoriously easy to "tap" into your email and most every Internet provider has the ability to do that.

Not to mention all the big brothers out there.

PGP is a good way of encrypting info related in an email, and guess what - the US government - among others, is fighting to keep the access of good security measures to a minimum - they want to be able to listen and monitor everything.

Some experts regard email as a postcard - ANYONE can read it on the way.

be advised.
