Blilious I fail to see how what a person writes in their profile could possible tell you anything about their character.

I can print my given name, but then, guys, try to spell it

I'll go into this subject a bit deeper.
In the forums i read and e-mail lists i subscribe to i find people telling a couple thousand total strangers, the knives and guns and other items they own, where they live, not that it's all to hard to find out anyway, and for some bizarre reason which I'll never understand when they're going to be out of town for a few days or on vacation.
They post things like "I'll be away from the group for 2 weeks I'm taking the family to disney world". I've also seen on more than one occasion where people have posted that their house was burglarized when they were away. Of course there is no way of knowing
if it was internet related but I think it's just common sense that total strangers know as little about you as possible. I've posted questioning the the act of announcing your vacation plans to the world only to be called paraniod. It's actually frightfully easy to find out what antiques, jewelry, baseball cards, you name it in collectibles and where the people live and when they're away just be hanging around where these topics are discussed. Call me paranoid?

I Agree with you Tom! BUT, two dogs in home, 1 dog outside home, will bite, will kill! Burgular Alarm System to electricute you once inside! CLOSE neighbors with shot guns and bazookas. And to top it off, there is always someone there as well. So, all for nothing! All you have to do is enter!

P.S. Almost forgot the most important part, knives will be flying at you in every direction by the numbers, you won't even see them coming at you until you feel the pain, they are trained to kill as well!

You guys will know from my posts far more about me than you need or will ever want to know about me. I know more about some of you than I need or will ever want to know, and I have a hard enough time accessing my own E-mails let alone yours.

Are all Lawyers like this?

Not to be difficult, but the quote is:

"Transdermal infiltration strikes deep, into your being nanotech shall creep..."

It's all done through the skin, by THEM.

Sometimes, through the eyes...

What the heck are you talking about?

Blilious:

Thank you for the warning. However, I am aware of the open nature of email. While I do consider email to be private, I do not consider them as secret as it is possible for others to overhear our conversations.

For secret convos, I agree with PGP. Another fun one to play with is hushmail. 1024k Blowfish. OUCH.

PhilL - thank God - not all lawyers are like that. There are only a hand full of lawyers that know their way around technological matters and the web in particular.

How else would I make a living
wink.gif

And to top it - there are even fewer lawyers who are paranoid knife/gun experts
wink.gif

SB - hushmail looks very strong indeed - but unlike PGP - it's their web site that is very secure - but they won't expose their true nature - which makes you wonder who gets free access...

As PhilL keeps saying (from inside his padded room) THEY ARE COMING....

I get junk mail, I get spam, I get phone calls for carpet cleaning or new siding at dinner time. If you want my e-mail anyone can have it, just ask, I'll give it no prob. I just want to cut the crap out.

"Just because You paranoid, does not mean that they are not out to get you!!" One of my old favorites. Anyone I have done deals with have had the option of a real physical address as well as a phone. I don't like it out over the web but one of the guys who bought from me posted it all once and no real problem yet. As far as big brother, I really hate to admit it but other than a verbal dislike for their attacks on our
freedom I really have not done a whole lot other than vote and my use of illegal goods or actions is/was pretty much non existent
frown.gif
. I also would like to believe that big brother has more important things to worry about than what I am doing, The guys assigned to that detail would be extremely bored I think. I agree with Mark Douglas on the issue of telling what you have then when you are gone, don't do it. Most guys get all annoyed if you don't respond right away on e-mail-well sometimes if you leave it is not anyones business. Sometimes you might remember that when dealing with people on the net. I do/would contact guys that I have current deals with about such situations though out of courtesy.

Obviously this is my name..... or is it? For anyone that distrusts me that much, i promise it's my real name, for what it's worth. I think personal info is just that, personal. If someone wants to post their address, phone number, alarm override code, what poison to use on their dogs, their safe combination, the police respose time, good entry/exit points from the house, when they're on vacation etc, let them. I choose to leave a fair ammount of info open to people, if anyone wants to know more, all they have to do is ask.

James, I am curious, and you said I could ask: what is REAL?

Paracelsus, wondering around the universe

What is REALITY, dear Paracelsus, is what I, oops, scratch that, THEY say...

Keep the posts coming; the database just keeps on growing...

You can't handle REALITY...

I am a big boy and can handle myself. The people I worry about are my family. I would hate to have something happen to one of them because of something stupid I said or because I got into an arguement with someone online. I have no problem having my email address or the region I'm from in my profile. I can change my email address at any time if it starts to become a problem. I do not, however, have my name in the phone book. I think it is robbery that I have to pay a monthly fee to keep it out, but it is money well spent. If I know your full name, and you are listed in a public phone book, I can get a map to your doorstep in 5 minutes. It is very easy to do online. Go to Yahoo if you don't believe me. I printed out maps to their front door for my family and friends. It even had motels to stay at and restaurants on it. Almost everyone of them took their name out of the phone book. That is some pretty scary stuff! Besides that reason, there is another reason not to ever give out your phone number. I have never gotten a telemarketing call. Ever.
I don't put my phone number on ANYTHING. Not on government documents, not on surveys, not on catalog orders, not anywhere. If someone needs to contact me, they can contact me through the mail, when I can deal with it at my leisure. The people who are important to me have my number and that's about it. Do you know that just about every state's automobile licensing agency sells your personal info to marketers? In Minnesota you have to go down and fill out a form to get them to stop. Is that nuts or what? One other place you shouldn't put any extra info on is your checks. I have mine and my wife's name and our address on it and that's it.
There is two reason's for this. The first one is that if your check book is ever stolen, the thief is much more apt to be asked for ID.
It is more of a hassle to alway's be asked for ID, but it something that is worth it to protect yourself. The other reason is because marketers, especially telemarketers, take your personal info off the top of your check and use it. A friend of mine works for a company that does it and he said that it is widely done. Most local places like gas stations and grocery stores want a phone number and driver license number so I just write it on the comment line. Since I am starting to ramble and get way off topic anyway, I will tell you one other trick. When you get unwanted telemarketing calls, don't hang up on them or tell them to take you off of their call list. When you hang up on them, most companies have automatic dialers that will call you back 3 hours to one month later. When you tell them to remove you from their call list, they take you off of their list, but they still sell your info to other companies. What's the answer? Either tell them that the person just died, or do what I do and tell them that they have the wrong number. Tell them that you just got this number and you are getting all kinds of calls for "that" person. Also, make sure you do it politely. If you are rude, they will sometimes leave you on the list just to piss you off. If you use either of these two methods, they will put you on their bad number list and not sell your info.
To reiterate, I would have no problem giving info to someone I "know" from the boards. I don't want it out there for people I don't know. We've all seen people come in here for a couple weeks and raise hell and then either get banned or they just plain vanish. All too often these days, information that we think is for our local community, is being pirated to the global community.

Take care, (AND your super secret black helicopter detector)

Jim

HUNTER3897,

You are right on - I have more methods to deter the telemarketing calls.

a. - I give them my home fax number - getting that protocol sound in your ear time after time is both painful and annoying - which leads them to take me off their list.

b. When they do get to my voice line - I just never hang up on them, when they realize I am not listening and they hang up - I use an automatic dialer to call them back - and keep it stuck for hours - trust me - if you menage to get one of their precious selling lines for three hours - they will NEVER call you again. (in the mean time use your cell phone)

c. Only when I am in a humorist mood I debate with them for 15 minutes on the virtues of the product, criticize it, ask all kind of questions, ask to be transferred to the supervisor for details the regular telemarketing agent doesn't know, after 10-15 minutes THEY realize they are not getting any data from me (I make sure it is that way) and they are NOT going to sell me anything - this is when I double my efforts to get still MORE info on the product and warranty - trust me - 3-4 conversations like that will get you off any mailing list...

Blilious,
Sounds as if we are cut from the same mold. If I ever get calls again I will have to
try some of those methods.
I don't know about in
Israel, but here in the
U.S., what I said about
never giving out your phone
number really works. The
only catch is that you have
to start doing it
immediately when you get
your new number. If you are already on someone's list,
it will just keep getting
passed around.
On another note, are you
watching your backside over
there? It sounds as if the
peace talks with Syria are
starting to stall. Is
Israel still going to pull
out of Lebanon? From what I read, it sounds like the
Hespbhala (sp?) would like
for that to happen. I'm
sure if anything happens
that you guys will still use your first rate Air Force to strike back. I saw a story
on 60 Minutes about how they set up ambushes along side
of the roads with bombs that look like rocks. They watch from afar until a car drives by and then set it off by
remote control. They also
had video of one of the
attacks where they had two
bombs set up and waited to
blow the second one until
the rescue workers arrived. That is some nasty stuff and extremely hard to defend
yourself from.

Take care and I hope this message finds you in good health,

Jim
