another 15" pen

Checked the mail and my very first khukuri arrived today, a 15" pen. Since it is my first, I don't have much to compare it to, but I will say WOW. It is a heck of a lot of knife for the money.

This one has the horn handle, and it feels great. It is very controlable and I like the way it balances. I didn't have any live trees to go hack, but I went through a 4 inch log from the fire pile without much trouble. The result was pretty similar to using an axe, chips of wood flying everywhere, but a lot easier to use than an axe.

Anyhow, I'm very happy with my first (and I'm sure not last) HI.

I didn't have any other khuks for size comparison, so I just picked up a couple random knives out of the case. The larger knife in the pics is 14" and the smaller is 9". There is another thread with better pictures, but I still wanted to show mine off :D

Nice! And good pics. I have got to get one of those someday, but since only two have been sold so far they are few and far between. Don't know why it took so long to come up with the concept...

I think there are 3 now. Looks like one (in Neem) was sold outside of the DOTD.

Eric.

Welcome.

read the safety thread, please.

Field report is due once the weather turns Spring-like. It will count towards your final grade.

Waterhouse I'm glad you like your PK. I might find a 15" useful but I was never turned on that much by the 12 inchers. I just like bigger khuks is all.;) :D

But to the subject at hand. Pray tell what are the other two knives you have pictured here with your PK?
Pretty obvious they're Damascus but are they custom and if so who made them and how long have you had them?
Most importantly, are they users?
Inquiring minds and all that you know. :o ;) :D
Whatever they are sure beautiful blades.

I'm with Yvsa. Those other knives are GORGEOUS!!!!! If they are "random out of the case" then please take pics of this case right away!!!!!!!!!! And of course the knives in it too.

Thanks guys.

The other knives were made by a family friend when we lived in Indonesia. His name is Teddy, but for the life of me I can't remember his last name. He made a bunch of damascus ones (I really only use one of the smaller ones, the larger ones are mostly just for display) and a couple of very nice 440c knives that I use all the time. Great guy, he would have knives on display and you could say "this would be better for me if it were shorter/longer/slightly different blade geometry" and the next time we'd go he would have made the knife you asked for.

My dad got a bunch of them, and my brothers and I got to split up the collection when he passed away.

Anyhow, here's a couple more. He made me a damascus sword too, but I just found out it's really hard to fit a sword in the frame and still get the blade to show any detail.

Wow, that one on the bottom is pretty awesome

But then I favour the unusual. ;)

Waterhouse your friend Terry is most definitely a Master Craftsman of the cutlery art!!!!
I really like that bottom one as well. The Valiant Company sometimes has knives of that style but I don't recall at the moment what they call them.
The Valiant Company carries a lot of Indonesian weapons and edged tools that are supposed to be of excellent quality.
I've been meaning to get something from them but just haven't as yet.

Here's a pic, it's called a Kujang Macan....

the first thing i thought before i read the replies was that looks like a nice indonesian pamor on the blades, it is distinctive. nice kujang - i see it has the 5 islamic holes rather than the 3 of the earlier ones like mine. your friend is definitely a master.

I have the third 15" pen knive with a neem handle. I would post a picture, but I'm not sure how to do it. I'm going to finish the handle later on today.

I know what you mean... I have been REALLY temped by this new combo they just came out with...
ComboGolok.JPG

Only $145.00!!!
I have one of the Survival Golok XXLs, but I only got that one because they were out of the Survival Golok L and was offered the XXL for the price of the L...
The handle of this thing is one of the most comfortable things you will ever feel... If the more flattened handle of the L that is included in this combo is anywhere near as comfortable as the one on my XXL, you would probably love it...
I will say that the XXL is a good compromise between a real machete and a real chopper(like the L)...

...and thats Australian Dollars, in US$ it's only $109.29.

it looks even more attractive in UK pounds - £62

i've had a golok & a kopis from him, both perfect & want to get a few more items after i recover from christmas.... the new items includes a double golok that looks interesting.

their 'kujang pamor' section includes a number of them similar to the waterhouse one, but not as nice.

Are you sure that that is not the US price???
I always thought he gave prices in US dollars...
But either way, a great price...
Shipping is the only thing that costs much...
Makes it much more attractive to buy multiple things at once!!!
:D :D :D

yup, all his prices are listed as A$ (australian dollars) & that's what i've always been billed / paid him in... and he DOES combine postage on multiple items if you email him...

approx. conversion rates:

1 A$ = .43 UK£ 1 A$ = .75 US$
or
1 US$ = 1.34 A$ 1 UK£ = 2.35 A$

Thanks, good info to know... I just looked at the total, last time I orderd, and thought that the shipping must have been MUCH less than everyone talked about...But NOW I guess that it was the PRICE that was MUCH lower than I was thinking!!!
