Powder steels like S30V can have chipping or deformation issues in some of the more severe cutting applications. It may be that 420HC has better edge stability than S30V, especially in larger blades. Read this for fun and possible enlightenment. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=485714&highlight=buck+bolt+hammer It should be noted, as a possible caveat, that the BOS heat treat seems to mitigate such difficulties.
