Best rule of thumb for a knifemaker is this: If you are going to be afraid to ruin something use it anyway. I know this sounds rather like a double negative, but a knifemaker only gets good at what he does by using the materials he does. Working mother-of-pearl, or ivory is a good example. Slip up once, and you could ruin a piece of material that cost you dearly. Do a good job, and you'll have a treasure that will find a home in someone's collection forever.
Don't be afraid to use your materials.
Treat your belts like they are disposable.
Use good supplies and your supplies will be good to you.
