i have a railroad tie that has already been shaped like an anvil and has a hardy hole. the top was ground flat but was ground at an angle. what is the best way to flatten this out? mind you i only have a 1x30 and an angle grinder. the hammering surface on this is about 10-12" long. come on out all you anvil experts and semi experts.

Well get a big hammer the biggest you can find and start beating it til its the right shape that you want. In about fifty years it will be there.

sounds like you have an anvil made from the rail -a railroad tie is the wood the rail lays on- do you have access to a large mill?? if not i would use a large angle grinder and go slowly checking often and get as level as possible then finish draw filing- that is a lot of trouble for a railroad track anvil- would be easier looking for a flat scrap block at salvage yard. bb
