I just saw a report as follows.

A USFS employee was charged by a Brown Bear in Alaska. He managed to stop it with the semi-auto 7mm Mag. he was carrying - just.

Examination of stomach contents revealed the bear had eaten some of two different humans in the past 72 hours. Backtracking from the site of the last incident, they found human remains and an empty .38 revolver. A hiker is missing in the area.

The bear was 1600 pounds and stood 14 feet to the top of his head when on two legs.

Forget khukuris. Send RPG's.

And all of your friends with RPG's as well.

1600 pounds? 14 feet? That's damned near the size of a small car.

Black bears scare me enough. I never did care much for those brown bears.

......"One of the knights told them that he has in amongst his suite a Czech who can strangle a bear. All wondered, brought the man into bear pit and indeed the Czech killed three bears consecutive with bare hands. Seeing that, the knight Zavis "the Black" of Garbow chalenged him to wrestle and after some fighting broke his neck."

...Guess our ancestor didnt needed RPG´s.....

(Zavis the Black of Garbow was probably best knight and soldierly fighter of all times, certainly the europe of early 15. century - he was from Poland)

That's a great story Hawkwind.

It might finally be time to shoot all the bears and pave all the trails. :D

This thread comes just as there's a story out about the amatuer naturalist who was killed photographing the big Browns. Do you know he actually touched one on the nose? His camp was at a major Bear crossing point where trails met.

But what really got me was his 37 year old girlfriend died along with him. I did not read that previously, though I assume it was out there. I also did not know they were both eaten.

There is a movie released from his film footage- with not enough mention of the dangers. Alaskan State officials are worried about copy cat photographers.

There is an audio tape of he and his girlfriend trying to fight off the bear that will 'never be released."
That's actually the tape that should have been a part of his film legacy.

Different species of bear. For a 1600 pounder, Zavis -- bare-handed (so the speak) -- would have been an appetizer.

I do not have link, as its from a book, and that in czech. But you might find something about particular knight as he was man of great renown and reputation. Look for battle of Grunwald, where he fought as a Pole against german "Knight of the cross" (together with a bunch of czech merc under Jan Zizka.
He later fought in Husite wars against husites, as he was catholic. Captured, but released because he was admired by all sides of conflict. He lived soldierly life even as quite old (45) and predicted to die by the sword.

Munk,

If I'm right, this was the guy I mentioned about three bear threads ago :). Reader's Digest did a big article on him. Yep, both him and his girlfriend ended up as supper. His girlfriend had the videocam running while he was getting munched (just audio though as she was hiding in the tent) That must have been the audio that won't be seen. The description in the RD was pretty awful.

The movie should be coming out soon.

1600 lbs, 14' bear!!! Luckily it wasn't a Zombie grizz... that park ranger wouldv'e been toast :D Sometimes it is just better to stay at home and watch the National Geographic channel...

Sounds like Zavis the Black was the inspiration for the character Conan the Barbarian. Lots of times, historical truth is better than fiction......

That the 14' 1600 bear succumbed to a 7mm is no suprise. Our Eskimo brethren have been slaying similar sized polar bears for years with .30/30's, .222's, .22 Hornets, and yes, occasionally with the lowly 22LR; proving once again, accuracy is everything.

Ok
A spear with a shaft of 3/4" stainless steel with a trangularly-beveled point, 8 feet long, with crossbar under the head and gripping surfaces near the back.

in conjunction with

an AK-47 (full auto)

The AK-47 should be mounted to the handle of the spear.

>>>>>

Yep, Alan, that's the one.

Could we rig the spear up to be a bayonet on the end of the AK??

Oh yeah, duh, of course we could.

Munk
that's brilliant Munk(and Bamboo)
Maybe we could develop some kind of ultra-strong, yet lightweight hollow- shafted stick, which can be attached to the rifle, like a bayonet. (if you have time)
You can use it to keep him at a distance or, if its not working, just fire through it.
You couldnt miss and you'd get the added effect of the muzzle blast creating an even larger cavity inside his body.
Well call it the "Bearonet"
