Another Bear Thread. Timothy Treadwell didn't fare so well singing to the bears.

Just think: little Johhny is waiting for the school bus, when suddenly his friend Billy is jumped by a mountain lion! Is Johhny going to start singing Burt Bacharach or pull out his khukri?

I'd hope for both. Music could make the scene more dramatic for the onlookers.

I watch too much tv. :) ;)

Rat Finkenstein Quote: "Common sense will tell you that this man knows infinitely more about grizzly bears than anyone." That's Hollywood screenwriter Robert Towne ("Chinatown"), also active in the late Treadwell's animal rightist group, "Grizzly People," headquartered in Malibu.

I don't think Rat should have been so quick to dismiss Mr. Towne's estimate of Mr. Treadwell.
It would seem that Mr. Treadwell really does have "inside information" on bears that the rest of us are not privy to.

Two thoughts:

1) As Dan pointed out, can you imagine going into the Alaska wilderness with a woman, and NOT taking along a defensive firearm of some kind? Even in an area that was not heavily populated by 1000 pound predators? Hell, I don't even go outside without some form of protection, and this idiot takes a frying pan along to a place this potentially dangerous.

I can just picture him cooing and crooning frantically to the monster Grizzly the song from Barney, as the bear was ripping great bloody chunks off his body: "Brother Bear, NO! Bad Bear! No popcorn for you tonight! 'I Love You! You Love ME! We're a Hap-py Fam-A-LY! With a great big hug and a kiss from me to' AHHH! $h*t! DAMMIT, cut that out you sonofa....", followed by loud crunching and munching sounds. (I know it's nothing to joke about, but still the temptation to do so is overwhelming. Sorry...)

2) The Darwin / gene pool connection has already been made. At least this dork didn't breed before he contributed to the ecosystem. Too bad about his girlfriend and the bears. Looks like she made a poor dating choice. :(

LOL! So true.

The foolish die foolishly,
The guy was plumb stupid to head into dangerous country with no means of self defense, and the girl was plumb stupid to go backwoodsing with such a dumba$$. If she had no suitable firearm, and he refused to carry one, she'd have been smarter dumping him for someone with better sense. The notion that the guy is solely responsible for the gal's safety is chivalrous and romantic, but a bit outdated.
Ladies, get yourself a guy with a proper head on his shoulders, but by gum keep yer powder dry and mind yer own topknot. If you don't know how to shoot, get someone to teach you safe weapon handling and marksmanship. If you don't own a suitable weapon for your personal defense, get one. Barring that, there is no better armor than plain common sense. Weigh the risks, before, you accept (or even smarter, reject) them.
I'd like to add that, while I've also pitched in my two cents to say some rather unkind things about the victims, my heart, and prayers, go out to their families. May they find some comfort in knowing that future lives might be saved as a result of this tragic example.

for a great article, wouldant have seen it otherwise.
the sad thing about this is the bears have been desensitised to the fear of humans by this guys actions, [AND OTHERS LIKE HIM DOING SIMILAR]
I think no one should be allowed to do this sorta thing unless accompanied by suitably armed park rangers ect.

it is commonsense that we are asking for trouble letting wild animals get used to humans, then expecting them not to harm us ????.

another example of this is feeding and baiting sharks with blood and whale offal ect so as to film them. then being surprised when they attack and kill divers and swimmers ect.

the stupidist thing i ever saw was a documentry on sharks where they stuffed a wetsuit with horse meat and attatched it to a rope behind a boat then filmed as a massive white pointer tore it to bits.
[one nicely trained white pointer now looking for other such targets  ]
