As I´ve been enjoying some free time lately, and I had the opportunity to spend some time with people from the "prepper" community, so, as you might expect, knives came to the discussion along with the "survival" terms...

To make a long story short, I was introduced to the terms, Urban-Dissaster Survival, Desert/Jungle/Forest Survival, Urban-Tactical/ Survival, and such. Which turned out to throw in some parameters to determine the attributes of knives...and as you might imagine, I decided to bring that discussion to this forum.

I won´t define each environment so anyone can throw ideas, please give me your opinions on the single knife most adecuate for each scenario.

Urban-Tactical Survival:
(only) Argonne Assault/BWM? Alternative: Waki. (most of them are too heavy/Slow)

Wilderness Survival:
NMFBM / BWM (the other options, are either too short or too heavy)

Urban Desaster:
----NONE OF THE BUSSES... (probably NMFFSH??) Alternative: Kill devil sniper hawk.

Let me know your opinions and the variables you had in mind to make your dessitions.

LOL... You got that right!...as with the best gun... the best one is the one you are carrying...

but, one could choose at least the best for wildernes survival, and keep a disaster survival at home...
BUSSE NMSFNO is very versatile , I would trust it to any task, it's big enough to chop, comfortable enough to perform smaller tasks with a little care, the weight and size make it easy to carry. And INFI stays sharp, if I had to carry one knife this would probably be it, although I would really like my BAE for the smaller stuff

There is two other knives that could be plugged in here that would fit the bill on all of the parameters IMHO. SFNO & NMSFNO. Do not underestimate the ability of the SFNO, Sabre!!!

Really there is several, SHe, NOe, Ripper, & MOJOs to name a few. I don't think I would won't to go below a 6" in the real world applications. Just my.02!!!

Rus, nmsfno, Noe , Bae are amoung my favorites , they weren't always, Using them made them my favorites, I LOVE my BAe and noe

If I were to pick one Busse to cover apocalyptic survival... everything from bushcraft to cutting open steel drums to fighting... I'd probably go with something like a CG Boss Jack with no choil. There are plenty of other knives that would be better at individual tasks, but that would be the best "Jack" of all trades for me, I think.

I would strap a TTKZ to my back and hang a SFNO on my belt for all scenarios.

Finally, I knife I can recognize I forgot about...the kopis design is the most proficient fighter/chopper ever...

I thank everyone for throwing the NOs, the Jack and others into the game, but !hey!, smaller knives are literally useless in jungle/swamp situations...One needs a machete or anything that resembles it, remember the Randall´s experience that derived with the Junglas multipurpose Machete. And finally, durign fighting situations, an smaller blade is in disadvantage with a kukri or a trench knife (TTKZ or AA)

these are our rivised picks:

Tactcial / TTKZ/AA (pure hand to hand combat)
Wilderness/ TTKZ/NMFBM/1311 (camping/bushcrafting/hunting/field chores)
Disaster...this category keeps on being abandoned by busse INHO... I think one needs a sort of breaching tool, or a thicker pry-knife/bar, to deal with car doors, and as well as masonery walls eventually (just as the army´s tomahawks currently in use in Irak or Afghanistan )

(thanks everyone for playing along)

Well, you didn't say anything about jungles. In a jungle I'd want a 1311 over anything other bussekin.

Wilderness around me (and in any realistic wilderness survival situation I would find myself in) would be better handled with a small to medium-sized knife, so long as it is stout enough to baton with in the winter.

Like I said in my post... there are knives that would be better fighters, better bushcrafters, better choppers, better sharpened prybars... but to best encompass all of them in one? Boss Jack with no choil.

I'd say the Swamp has addressed this with the Kill Devil and as far as a knife goes, shoot any of the Yard, Swamp or Busse in the 6-8" will more than do the job. I mean a Kill Devil and a R7 would be more than up for the task!!!

Jerry Busse himself once pried open a vehicle door with a Satin Jack.

Pretty sure that many Busse blades would serve well in a "disaster' situation. Myself, although I love all the knives listed so far, would either be reaching for an original Team Gemini, or a Desert Storm Fighter as it is basically a jacked up Jack for the urban/disaster category. SFNO LE or SARsquatch for wilderness.

...As for hand to hand...well, against someone who may be as desperate as you, or even more, chances are there will be major injuries sustained by both parties. I'd rather grab a long pipe or bat. Strictly knives, a 14" INFI Silent Knight Big Boy or a 15" Ruck is going to give me the reach over an AA. I don't trust my TTKZ's handle (in my hands anyway) enough to consider it, but a KZII might do as well. I certainly won't argue against the effectiveness of a khukri in combat, LOL.

Just my thoughts from an armchair while sipping hot coffee...YMMV. ;)

I think the bwm would be good for those scenarios. Its my favorite big knife so far. maybe the anniv shbm will out do it,but I don't have it yet.

TTKZ or Waki for large blade, and DSF or TGLB for medium. All four of those blades are extremely capable fighting blades. Plus they can do just about everything else you can think of. Might be nice to throw an RMD in the mix as well.

The caveats listed in parentheses about your example blades being too heavy, too slow, or too short would all be erased by a Basic 11.

Right on Will...that would be my other choice! In fact, I keep one with a small emergency kit in my truck.;):thumbup:
