.."Another best knife for"...kind of thread, with new variables.

Right on Will...that would be my other choice! In fact, I keep one with a small emergency kit in my truck.;):thumbup:

ME2—great minds... :D

I also keep this modded S5LE in the truck.

Finally, I knife I can recognize I forgot about...the kopis design is the most proficient fighter/chopper ever...

I thank everyone for throwing the NOs, the Jack and others into the game, but !hey!, smaller knives are literally useless in jungle/swamp situations...One needs a machete or anything that resembles it, remember the Randall´s experience that derived with the Junglas multipurpose Machete. And finally, durign fighting situations, an smaller blade is in disadvantage with a kukri or a trench knife (TTKZ or AA)

these are our rivised picks:

Tactcial / TTKZ/AA (pure hand to hand combat)
Wilderness/ TTKZ/NMFBM/1311 (camping/bushcrafting/hunting/field chores)
Disaster...this category keeps on being abandoned by busse INHO... I think one needs a sort of breaching tool, or a thicker pry-knife/bar, to deal with car doors, and as well as masonery walls eventually (just as the army´s tomahawks currently in use in Irak or Afghanistan )

(thanks everyone for playing along)

Tactical for me would be my Glock 19. I would never dream of getting into a knife fight and if I had no where to run or any other option I would simply use what ever I had on me. One thing to keep in mind here is that if you look into knife fighting speed is very important so for me I would want something lighter in weight than either of the ones you listed.

Wilderness is a pretty easy choice for me and that's a RMD. You really don't need a 13 inch knife to get all your tasks done and I would much rather carry a RMD around than a Killa or BM.

Disaster again I would go with RMD for my knife. If you manage to break a 3/16 thick piece of SR101 then you are doing something very wrong. That being said I would likely have a hawk with me as well but I wont mention the maker because this is the Busse forum.

...
I won't define each environment so anyone can throw ideas, please give me your opinions on the single knife most adequate for each scenario.
...
There are many variables to survival in addition to the ones you listed (urban-tactical, wilderness or urban disaster) - here are just a few:
- What season, and what part of the world is involved - winter in Canada is much different than summer in Florida, and this would apply to urban or wilderness needs. Obviously hurricanes affect the southern and eastern coasts of the US, but usually not so much far inland (except for maybe heavy rain and flooding) - consider the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. A heavy snowstorm could be very serious in the northern US (possibly causing loss of electrical power for an extended period of time), but is not a concern in south Florida.
- Thinking especially about urban settings, what shape is society in - is it organized, semi-organized or total chaos? Unless it is total chaos and law enforcement has given up, walking down the street with something like a kukri or sword will likely get you in a lot of trouble, or at the very least the large knife/sword will be confiscated by LE. If it is total chaos in an urban setting, I would not want to depend on a knife/sword of any size for self defense.
- Regardless of the 3 scenarios you mentioned, what is your goal - to stay safe hunkered down in one spot, or will you need to be on the move (looking for food or water, trying to escape a large city or wilderness area, etc.)? If you are on foot and need to go very far, a person can only carry so much, so weight would be a concern.

I enjoy large Busses, but they are not good for every situation (try removing a splinter from your finger, or fileting a small fish with a knife the size of a BWM or NMFBM); the big knives are fine for chopping and/or prying. Also think about a Basic 9, 10 or 11 as your large knife choice. I consider a large knife essential for many survival situations, but I also want at least a small and medium size knife as well.

The caveats listed in parentheses about your example blades being too heavy, too slow, or too short would all be erased by a Basic 11.

Hi Will, You got that right...another one I neglected... Is there any head to head between the B11 and the KZ?, I in fact was looking for it to join my collection at some point, but I forgot about it after all

Jerry Busse himself once pried open a vehicle door with a Satin Jack.

Pretty sure that many Busse blades would serve well in a "disaster' situation. Myself, although I love all the knives listed so far, would either be reaching for an original Team Gemini, or a Desert Storm Fighter as it is basically a jacked up Jack for the urban/disaster category. SFNO LE or SARsquatch for wilderness.

...As for hand to hand...well, against someone who may be as desperate as you, or even more, chances are there will be major injuries sustained by both parties. I'd rather grab a long pipe or bat. Strictly knives, a 14" INFI Silent Knight Big Boy or a 15" Ruck is going to give me the reach over an AA. I don't trust my TTKZ's handle (in my hands anyway) enough to consider it, but a KZII might do as well. I certainly won't argue against the effectiveness of a khukri in combat, LOL.

Just my thoughts from an armchair while sipping hot coffee...YMMV. ;)

A ruck, deffinately will do a lot more than a machete if you had no option but to use it, and I think I allready placed it...

as far ass the Jack story, the memmory of some forum members is striking...I read about that story about a year ago, and I totaly forgot about it.

I'd say the Swamp has addressed this with the Kill Devil and as far as a knife goes, shoot any of the Yard, Swamp or Busse in the 6-8" will more than do the job. I mean a Kill Devil and a R7 would be more than up for the task!!!

Yup, the first suggestion was the Kill devil, and a long knife aparently...you are right there as well.

Thanks a lot guys

... Is there any head to head between the B11 and the KZ?

A great one from peterPHWS comparing the two (also check for other threads from peterPHWS with keyword Basic 11):

Not KZ related, but an all-time favorite from oge14:

another from oge14:

Just remember the KZ is a much, much heavier knife. Great for a campsite or vehicle, but on your person/pack it's a major chunk of weight. In a lightweight sheath on your belt, the B11 just disappears from notice until you need it. Then it performs in spades.

It's a good thing you posted that last sentence... I was about to start some unsolicited solicitations.

...Then it's a good thing that you didn't read it correctly... But just the same, don't be solicitin' me! ;):D:D

Hah, I read it wrong. I thought you meant you only had two of them left... not that you still had all but two.

Here come the solicitations!
