Another Cliffhanger

Hey Steve you caught me, I was looking through woodcarving journal and came across this handle design:D Seriously though I appreciate the feedback, I guess this may be my shortcoming with my design philosophy I make what I want with no regard to well beaten paths followed. Steve I am surely afraid of what you will say when I build my first forged bowie, it's pretty much guaranteed that I will violate all the rules in the classical sense:cool: but you know thats the way SAR custom knives operates.

There is no argument in your knowledge of knives and knife styles and I glad to see you comment on one of my knives thats something that has not happened in many moons, so thanks again for the solid feed back.

Spencer
It's OK to make your own rules to an extent. That's how we got to where we are today.
Can't wait to see that Bowie.

I like your work, Spencer....some of it is very appealing....also understand the need to go your own way....because my initial critique of your work was harsh, I try to offer up something that may be useful, without resembling my fourth point of contact.:D

Would suggest....mildly, that with the japanese work, the habaki(blade collar) is there for a reason, and it isn't to look pretty....it bears studying.

Best Regards,

The what the chewbacca, habaki.... you have a picture and I am not trying to be funny, I think something you guys do not understand. When I got started in knife making it was to fill a void so if I come off naive its because its true "I am a bit uneducated but trying to learn everyday. I really new nothing on the knife industry at all, I did not even collect knives 2.5 years ago

Here is something I said some time back regarding rules on another forum board and what not and I will apply it here because it still stands true to me.

"After over 16 years in the armed force's being held to standards both legally and morally. I think whatever ones opinions of what constitutes handmade, custom, mid-tech, production forged , stock, removal, imposed rules "this is the way its done" etc etc blah blah and blah. If it works for you and you can look yourself in the mirror everyday then more power to you. I will build what I like but the bottom line is honesty and call it what I like.

In a nut shell its called integrity

But I am starting to narrow down what I build, what I like to build and truly think about what the customer wants.

Hope that makes sense to you guys, just trying to shed a little light on where I am coming from.

Steve everyone lands on there 4th point of contact and I am guilty of it as well.

Thanks
Spencer

Crap, that makes me feel old.:o

Anyway, the habaki is the collar on a blade...it serves to both take the shock out of the blade in hard contact, and to isolate the blade from the scabbard.

And they do look mighty cool, imho.
