Was trolling through the tools section of the closest CL city, about 110 miles away, and found this last week.

A Rockwell model 7V horizontal metal cutting bandsaw, in working condition. For $45. I drove down same day and picked it up. I spent one day this weekend intensively repairing and modifying it, and now it works great and can be swung to vertical position. It's a much bigger and nicer saw than the 4x6 I'd been using.

I was thinking about doing a thread with some pics about my repair and rebuild/mod of this saw, just as an example to guys still tooling up how to turn a machine being let go due to damage and neglect into better than new in ways. Maybe next weekend.

This is not my saw, but it is the identical model except for mine has the mobility kit. Just for an idea.

I hit a deer head on at 60 mph on the way back, screwed my truck up but the saw was strapped down tight. I'm not counting the damage to my rig into the cost of the saw, which would be a depressing way of looking at it...

Congratulations. I am sorry to hear5 about your truck. I got my holiday ding on the way home from work before Thanksgiving.

My latest is a great lathe. The Mill should get delivered sometime this week I hope. :O

Why do the people around me never sell anything cool on CL :(

Nice score Salem!

Edited to add that I immediately went to look on CL and found all sorts of cool stuff, 2x72 belt grinders, power hammers, a mechanical metal cutting saw from 1912, a powermatic surface grinder... but all waaaaaay out of my price range.

Nice score.

The only thing people sell on CL around here are filthy couches and overpriced, ragged out cars/trucks.

www.searchtempest.com - Here's a CL search engine. I don't limit my search to x minutes drive. Many will ship. It's not as convenient as pick up but I've found people to meet me 1/2 way even 45 minutes to an hour.

I have an old bandsaw that needs some TLC, so I'm really looking forward to the rebuild pics!

Salem- NICE! :D

$45 eh?!?!? Dang. So what was wrong with it, to make the seller get rid of it for so little?

I would bet that saw is pretty similar to my Jet 7X12, and when I got it for $650 from a scratch and dent dealer, it was a great deal! $45 is crazy insane good. ;) :)

Sorry to hear about the deer! When I started teaching Erin to drive last year, one of the first rules I tried to lay down--- "If there's an animal right in front of you, and you don't know exactly what else is around your lane.... and it's smaller than a horse or a cow, grit your teeth and hit it. As much as you don't want to kill something like a cat, dog, deer... it is NOT worth swerving into another vehicle head on, or off a cliff!!!"

It's one of those things that's easy in theory but SOOO hard in application. :foot:

Was there anything left to take home for meat? Or was it just obliterated at that speed? Back when my Dad worked at a state juvenile detention center in the 70's, the state patrol brought in freshly hit deer and elk (even a cow once!) ALL the time. I think that's illegal now, which is sad since it's a waste of an animal.

Hope you're okay and your truck doesn't require too much fix'n. :)

Nice, Salem. Such a deal woudn't even be usable in my tiny space, but I'm glad it went to someone who knows how to restore it and has space and a use for it. Well played, sir.

And about the deer... pity you didn't have adeer hunting tag. Admitedly, a truck isn't an approved killing tool, but scoring the meat would have helped defray the costs of the repairs.

Dozier, I hit the deer head because it was attached to the neck, which I also hit! Damage is reparable (by me) but will take a few weeks and hopefully I can find a parts truck around here somewhere.

I would have loved to take the deer home with me, but it was pretty crushed internally from the impact. Also, I had to get a ride home with the saw, wife, and some groceries so I couldn't have taken it with even if the cops would have let me.

Trailered the truck up next day and had to spend two days trying to get it up my freshly snow covered mountain road. 4x4 and chains ultimately prevailed. Luckily I have good friends and family to help me out when this kind of crap happens.

It's about a 7x11 or 12" saw, they were getting rid of it because it would not cut straight anymore and was slowing down production at the shop it was in. They certainly weren't much at fixing machines- the wheels were badly out of alignment, as were the roller guides. It was not too hard to correct with standard adjustments as described in the manual. The top wheel had about 1/4" end-play in the shaft, resulting from incorrect re-assembly after repair. The belt-driven pulley wobbled like hell and vibrated, the new one I had on hand didn't- especially when I tightened it onto the shaft sufficiently. The hydraulic feed cylinder was empty and leaky, also an easy fix, no new seal necessary. The auto shutoff switch had developed serious slop- their fix was to electrical tape a big washer to the top of the cylinder for it to contact. Mine was to fix the switch. Now I just have to obtain a nice piece of 3/8"-ish mild steel plate about 18" square for a cutting table in vertical mode.

But, I'll detail these bits in my rebuild thread when I get the chance. Now, I can't wait until I have to slice some more cookies off of my DHIII 2-5/8" W2 rounds!

Cool vids, Count.

Well the necro value of this thread is lower than the other one I posted a couple years ago. Wow time flys fast.

This is about where I am with my machines. I am just about (a little closer to) ready to start making more of those rookie mistakes.

And here is most of my "shop" so far.

And here is where I am at (a little further now actually) with my SouthBend 10" toolroom lathe. This is what has been comsuming most of my time lately.

It is nice to know that I am not alone. I hope you all like the photos. I can't wait to show completion photos. I want to put my power sander on a rolling concrete pad with some seriously heavy caster wheels I have in the "shop", that will be this weeks project to knock out.
